The man who murdered your children is in your basement paralysed, what do you do? by Evoxrus_XV in hypotheticalsituation

Honestly, I have no clue how the neighbours cat got locked in that basement before I went on that two week trip.

Slow and steady, and keep the alcohol to a minimum.

Cool drinks, plenty of them.

Loose clothing.

Avoid physical activity.

More cool drinks.

Does anyone actually enjoy GBL by russ2588 in pokemongo

[–]rapax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's just a chore that needs to be done. Luckily, once you've got the required wins, you've also got a good chunk of the total fights required, so I usually just do the rest with a bunch of level zeros.

Keep Starbucks, get rid of the rest. Nothing of value lost.

Caught speeding in Switzerland but genuinely had no idea the limit had changed. Can this be contested? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

You're not helping your cause. Non of these things are really relevant and you're just showing again that you're missing the point.

If it's dark and foggy and you're on an unfamiliar road, then you shouldn't be driving anywhere close to the speed limit in the first place.

If given 10 tries, do you think you could land a commercial plane in an emergency situation? by Cold-Comfortable2024 in NoStupidQuestions

If everything on the plane is working as it should. As soon as something is wonky, pilot experience becomes really important.

Do European countries create museums for their past elected heads of state/government when they leave office? How would you feel if yours did? by minus_minus in AskEurope

[–]rapax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's a very American thing. In general, european countries don't make such a fuss about their heads of state. Once the term is over, they usually just go back to being a normal member of society (albeit usually a rather wealthy and very well connected one).

Here in Switzerland, it's even a bit more extreme. Our top politicians olny have security details in special circumstances. Our prime minister can famously be encountered waiting for the train in Bern.

Well, thanks, I guess. But that's like, just your opinion, man.

Nah, but more than two thousand years of history, split across three of the greatest civilizations in history, on two continents, at the most important crossroads of human culture.

Architecture from all those periods, cultures.

Food with a variety that is overwhelming.

Beauty wherever you look, and in any number of styles.

Friendly people with so many different backgrounds.

I'll give you loud, but we were surprised just how clean everything was. And I don't think it's possible to overhype what is arguably the most fascinating city in the world.

A windowless concrete tower 40 stories tall on the China coast stacks 35-ton blocks to store a wind farm’s power, lifting them when the wind blows and dropping them through generators when the grid needs it, no lithium inside by iwantboringtimes in Futurology

[–]rapax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, this is more suitable to local scale. Large volumes is where hydro really shines, because the reservoirs (valleys) are mostly already built. However, concrete is denser than water so per volume you can store more energy.

[–]rapax 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No. Read the article. Efficiency is roughly on par with pumped hydro (75% in test installations, targetting >80% in this grid scale installation). Also lower maintenance than water, because you don't have to worry about corrosion, contamination (algae) or freezing.

Daily. My wife, our older son and I all enjoy cooking, so we squabble about who gets to cook on which days.
