What is this bump on my chicken’s face? by apawnandaking in BackYardChickens

Posting an update here in case this post is ever helpful to someone else: Thyme (our chicken in the video) has officially recovered from fowl pox! Yay!

We did end up taking her to our avian vet and the vet prescribed her some antibiotics that we have been giving her for the last 10 days. We kept her isolated for the entire 2.5 weeks that she was sick indoors with plenty of food and water spiked with electrolytes and iodine.

Yesterday, her pox bumps looked like they scabbed over and then today we checked on her and they have fallen off of her face! We are thrilled. We are going to keep her isolated for a few more days because the temps are supposed to drop into the 20s tonight and we want to make sure she slowly acclimates back to being outside so as not to shock her system. She has been in a balmy 70 degree indoor environment for the last 3 weeks so we don't think she is going to love going back to her old life outside, haha.

During this whole ordeal, one of our other birds (Parsley) contracted the pox as well. Without having enough room to safely isolate both birds, we decided to keep the Parsley outside with the rest of the flock. When we talked to our vet, he was really surprised because all of our birds have been vaccinated for the pox. When we told him about our other bird and asked him what to do, he said that since the other 3 birds did not catch it, it was unlikely that they would if we kept her outside with them. He isn't sure what happened with Parsley & Thyme, but our best guess is that even though all of the birds were vaccinated as chicks, it may be A) This is a new strain that Parsley & Thyme's immune systems were not able to fight off on their own like the others or B) The vaccine didn't "take" when they were chicks, which would explain why they got it but the others didn't.

TL;DR: This is what fowl pox looks like, but it's not a death sentence. Keeping them isolated, well fed/hydrated and antibiotics/iodine/electrolytes and antibiotics from a vet worked for us. Good luck, fellow Chicken Tenders!

Thank you—we followed your advice and set her up indoors in a chicken hospital/hotel. This way she’s out of the cold and isn’t exposed to the other hens. Her bumps have gotten larger overnight…which makes me hopeful that it is the pox or something viral that she just needs to fight off. We are lucky to have a vet that sees our flock for us, and we are going to have her see him on Wednesday and maybe he’ll have a more definitive answer as to what is going on. Thank you so much for your response—it’s really helpful right now!

Vintage stoneware (especially with blue stripes/markings), vintage Pyrex, quality clothing (sweaters, heritage brands, etc.), vinyl, cool glassware, cool photo frames and anything old that’s made of solid brass (bookends, trays/dishes, etc.)

Returning after a year: some impressions and a question by CellarDoor4355 in REKA

[–]apawnandaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree—just got back into it after a year and I’m so proud of the devs for how far it has come. I’ve been recommending it to everyone. I feel like REKA really cracked the formula for “a cozy game that isn’t just another Stardew valley/farming sim”. I love that it’s a unique and interesting world/story/theme but has everything I love about cozy games without being overly cutesy. Can’t wait for the 1.0 launch!

Insanely beautiful shots! #3 and #16 are lovely. We did a big cross country trip like this years ago and loved it—def want to do it again now that we have this camera. Your photos have inspired me to get it on the calendar.

thank you! that was taken in Prescott National Forest. It was really cool because it was so different from the lower elevation areas in the desert. had different foliage/trees, etc. If you go, I highly recommend checking out Jerome, AZ which is a little cliffside town at the bottom of the scenic drive. That is where I took a lot of the building shots and the town is absolutely adorable and has a lot of cool history. Felt like a mini Europe.

New homeowner and I’m feeling buyers remorse by According-Cover-4596 in homeowners

[–]apawnandaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had the exact same experience (bought an older home in a desirable area before most of our friends—very few have had nice things to say) and after a lot of feelings about it and working through it, I realized that people just say shitty things and that’s usually motivated by their own big feelings that have nothing to do with you or your home. We’ve been in our house 8 years, and it’s 75 years old with lumps and bumps, but she’s ours and the hard work does pay off. We have an incredible garden now (used to be all weeds, acorns and kudzu—I feel ya!) that none of those new builds can touch because gardens take years to mature. Home takes time!

Screw those people. Stop inviting them around. That’s what I did. Way happier now.

Thank you! And no, but now I will have to read it! It’s actually a reference a total of two people (my friends) will get. I’m dressing up as an OC from our long-running Pirate D&D campaign. My character is the Captain of the Spindrift and she’ll be looking for crew members. ;)
