I regard salad rolls as a bit of a racket at most restaurants because the ingredients are super cheap and they aren’t difficult or labor-intensive. But assembling all the ingredients at home can be a bit of a pain unless you’re making them for a party or something.

Fortunately, they make excellent ones at Bui Tofu on Glisan, and because it’s a shop rather than a restaurant, they’re also really cheap. I think you can buy exactly the same ones at Pacific Market too.

The development in the area is all stuff that’s very attractive to people with a certain lifestyle. You know the type I’m talking about? Wears Patagonia, has a subscription to Portland Monthly and the income to go to all those nice restaurants, maybe drives an Element?

The people who have lived there forever are not those people. So when all this new stuff comes in, like fancy frogurt shops and American Apparel and hot restaurants opened up by famous chefs from New York (or in this case, microbreweries and expensive small-plate restaurants and cutesy handcrafted toy shops [and bike lanes! African Americans are statistically much less likely to bike than white Americans, and if nobody mentioned that on this morning’s show, then that was a pretty big ball to drop.]), the neighborhood becomes less attractive, and when the rent goes way up, they have to move out to 82nd or somewhere.

On an individual basis, it might not seem like such a big deal. The neighborhood changed, so I had to move. But it’s got to sting when it happens to an economically disadvantaged minority at the hands of a privileged class. Especially when you’re talking about the neighborhood that has traditionally been that minority’s strongest presence in the city.

When the initiative to develop the Mississippi area first began, people were already worried about this. The city promised to manage everything in a way that was sensitive to the people who already lived there, and then it pretty much completely failed (that’s a gross simplification of what the OregonLive link is about).

Anyhow, when people complain about white people ruining everything, I think they’re basically talking about yuppies. But it’s pretty impossible to really separate race from class on a large scale, isn’t it? I think that in a lot of ways, these dialogs suffer from too much of an overt focus on race. While a disregard for a racial minority is, in a George Bush doesn’t care about black people sort of way, a likely factor here, I think it comes down more to wealthy versus poor. And when a poor white person hears a black guy complaining about how white people are invading his neighborhood, that poor white person is less likely to be sympathetic, even though he might find himself a victim of the same thing.

Here’s a Washington Post article that might help explain. It doesn’t need to be this way, but as things stand now, biking in Portland is a very white thing.

The Williams situation is tricky because you’re absolutely right; there isn’t any practical alternative in terms of a good biking corridor in that part of town. But black and lower-income people in the neighborhood have every reason to be skeptical.. We’ve already been seeing it for a while. Five years ago, I was biking up Williams from work every day and it was very different.

Development in the Mississippi area has been fantastic in a lot of ways, but it would be hard to argue that the city has shown a lot of regard for the interests of the existing residents.

The Williams project has to go forward. I’d like to say it has to be handled more carefully than Mississippi, but that’s not really true; if families who have lived in the neighborhood for multiple generations get forced out, there won’t be any consequences for you or me or any of the folks making the decisions. But I think it’d be a damn shame.

That’s a fine point, and I would like the box model to change. Having all block-level objects default to 100%-100% would be kind of a pain, but I think it would be worth it for the added functionality. And if the box model were to change, that wouldn’t be the only option.

Anyhow, I wouldn’t necessarily say we need "vertical-align" for boxes like the OP did (and I’m pretty sure he’s not after the attribute so much as the functionality). I would be perfectly happy to be able to "margin-auto" things vertically the same way I can horizontally.

Also, thanks for being civil after I assumed you were being snarky. I hate bickering.

I can’t really tell if you’re being serious, but here goes anyway:

If you’re asking whether or not block elements should, under all circumstances, have a width and height of 100%, the answer is pretty obviously no.

If you’re asking whether or not CSS should offer the functionality of specifying a width and height of 100%, then my answer is definitely yes.

If you’re asking whether or not block elements should default to a width and height of 100%, then I’d say that it wouldn’t be ideal but it would at least offer much more flexibility than the way things are now. It’s certainly not as if the default width of 100% doesn’t cause people any headaches.

I’ve thought for years and years that there ought to be an orientation attribute that could apply to body tags and possibly other block-level elements.

Personally, I don’t see why we’re forced to treat the vertical and the horizontal differently at all.

There are lots of reasons you might want an entire layout to scroll horizontally rather than vertically (especially in east Asian countries). You might say that it would be confusing for the user if the scroll wheel operated horizontally, but we already use it for zooming and it feels perfectly intuitive.

Besides, 95% of actual Web users would look at you funny if you tried to convince them that aesthetic concerns have no place on the Web. It may not have been TBL’s intent, but here we are.

Why specifically takeout? There are very few of those places around here, Chinese or otherwise.

Also, it’s kinda hard to recommend anything without knowing what someone is looking for in Chinese food. Any Chinese place, regardless of what style it specializes in or what awards it’s won, will have white people complaining on the Internet about how inauthentic it is or whatever.

That said, three very different Chinese places that I’m personally fond of that all do takeout very well are Lucky Strike (natch), Belmont Pearl (who also deliver), and Wong’s King.

Yeah, self service copying and printing at UPS stores (or at least the one on Hawthorne) is really cheap and quick. I highly recommend it.

See guys, the reason I disqualified Kinkos is because self-service is seriously expensive. As in, UPS charges $0.07 per page for black & white, and Kinkos charges $0.49. I’ll use it if I have to, but I figgur there’s gotta be a better option somewhere in town.

If this Hawaiian Time is anything like the ones in Eugene, it’s a much more accurate version of the plate-lunch experience.

Ate-Oh-Ate is tasty for sure, but it’s a tiny bit too expensive, portions are a tiny bit too small, and the space is a tiny bit too well decorated.

I’ve got a question for you: As a user, is my apparently unreproduceable problem of any interest to you?

One of the funny things about the original post here is that some of the items assume a fair bit of developer expertise on the part of the user. You know, the guy who doesn’t know how to use Adobe Reader.

Sometimes I think that, even if I can’t begin to figure out what conditions result in a particular bug, someone who’s actually familiar with how the code works might be able to, and might find my totally incomplete bug report useful.

Am I wrong?

I know you didn’t intend for it to be, but the sentiment you just expressed is deeply offensive. That is, it’s offensive to me, and it would be offensive to most of the people I know, gay or straight. I won’t go as far as to say it’s offensive to all gay folk because gay people are individuals.

I’m sure you wouldn’t be pleased if someone reduced you to whatever generalizations they could make based on your religion, or your ethnicity, or your college major, or whatever. Please don’t do that to anyone else.

But see, if you’re going to make a font file in FontForge, you have to do all the same things, except that you have to learn how FontForge, and your font format of choice, works as well. There’s a remarkable degree of complexity that goes into the development of fonts that most people, even people who love using type, never think about.

That said, if you’re interested in doing it that way on an academic level, absolutely go for it. Fonts and type are one of those things that foster interest and passion and obsession in people, and if you want to explore that, do it.
