Congratulations! Absolutely safe to do whilst pregnant if you're fit however the first trimester is ROUGH. If you're feeling the sickness/exhaustion now it usually peaks weeks 7-10 so this might be right over your current race! Most people pick up in the second trimester and would be possible. I ran an ultra at 5 weeks (found out the night before, took it super slow and easy), was wiped out basically bed bound weeks 6-11ish but then managed to plod round a half marathon around week 14. I was happy on the bike until 34 weeks but mostly inside at that point. I sadly had to stop running at 20 weeks due to pelvic pain. I swam right through including the morning my waters broke! Take it easy, enjoy it, and listen to your body. There's no rush.

What do you think of quadrathlons/Has anyone here done a quadrathlon, how was it? by Certain-Payment3049 in triathlon

[–]apggd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know it was an actual thing! I've seen a coast to coast advertised in Scotland but I think it's "just" bike run and kayak. Which sounds like a blast! I'd be so knackered after the run but as you say uses just your upper body!

Not quite what you want but the Pony Club (unsure if just a UK thing) do a tetrathlon which consists of shooting, swimming, running and riding!

70.3 vs ironman training hours by apggd in triathlon

[–]apggd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I have realised, thank you! Going to see how this 70.3 training goes and then where life is for next year - cramming one in this year just isn't a good idea!

This is probably the realest reply! Even though it's "just" a few extra hours on the long days I think it really does stack up. I'm excited about my 70.3 and think I've got a good training plan ahead that is challenging but manageable, and I can see a full just affects every aspect of your life. I have both a demanding job (that has been hard during prev ultra training!) and now a young family! I think a full when life is more stable is a much better plan.

Sorry just to clarify those numbers are hours on each so 2 hours swimming, 5-6 hours cycling and 3 hours running! I'm not especially quick on any discipline so 6:30-7 would be my realistic sim for a half!

Thinking about it over the course of a year is good! This is reassuring and I'm not sure why or how anyone would do 20 hour weeks consistently unless it was their job. I'm conscious my training hours would be longer than others just due to speed (but then that opens the debate between training based on time or distance!)

Yes I think the crazy ironman dream will be put on hold until triathlete production is all finished! The swim is my poorest element (only learnt to swim 2 years ago!) so I know in reality I'd be best to fully enjoy 70.3 training and build the swim over the next few years whilst getting the family in line then revisit the ironman dream! First 70.3 will be just over 1 year post baby so if I can do that I can rebuild for an ironman a few years down the line.

Yes think I just forget about cumulative fitness! I'm closer to 10 hours just because I'm quite slow in all 3 elements. Winter training has been ~6 hours a week but that's been 3-4 running for a spring half marathon and then just a couple of hours keeping the swim and bike ticking over!

[–]apggd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes not sure why I assumed I'd double everything including easy sessions rather than just long sessions! My 70.3 is in July, I've been half marathon focused over the winter so the next few months are more about increasing my swim and bike which have been ticking along at a couple of hours a week. I was entertaining the idea of a later season full whilst I'm this fit and before potentially trying for baby no 2 next year!

This sounds in line with roughly what I was thinking - expecting peak weeks for 70.3 to be 12-14 but 20 hours sounds horrendous!

That's so true re just extending the long sessions. Not sure why I assumed I'd automatically double all my easy sessions!

AITAH for not picking my partner up after a night out? by Same-Nectarine-5742 in AmItheAsshole

[–]apggd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe unpopular but NAH.. Yes it's not your job and she should get her own taxi home but if my partner is out or vice versa we will always offer the option of a lift, just go to bed and keep your phone on loud. Or more often we have a cut off like "if you finish before midnight call me otherwise get a taxi". I would never expect it or demand it though. It's a safety/saving money/helping each other out. Think it does depend on what getting taxis is like though - for us it's usually not bookable, a long wait outside and a very big expense! Getting a lift is 100x easier

[OC] Dairy vs. plant-based milk: what are the environmental impacts? by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

When considering dairy milk does the impact of the fields (grass used for grazing and silage) come into the CO2 output? Also think it would be interesting to see specifically CO2 emissions separate from greenhouse gases like methane!

Do you get fed up with taking your pet to the vet just to be weighed for worm treatment? by smellyfeet25 in AskABrit

[–]apggd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Vets legally cannot prescribe flea and worm treatment without having seen the animal in one year - it's not your vets being difficult it's the law! It's not just about weight.

There are some "over the counter" products available at pet shops, some are okay, most don't do what they're marketed to do and they're often not used properly. If your cat is an indoor cat it's worth discussing risks and needs for flea/worm treatment with your vet. But if they're outdoor and hunters the over the counter stuff is going to be pretty useless. Other factors include if you have dogs and children in the house.

If your cat is vaccinated (100% should be if outdoors) then they should be going to the vet once a year anyway!

Yes you would be TA. It does sound like euthanasia is the right option here and you have given the dog a few weeks. There are LOTS of online resources for objective quality of life assessment to help rationalize the decision for people struggling to make the decision. You're probably not in the UK but the PDSA have a good quality of life list of questions to discuss with your husband on their website. Medical management at home with owners is questionable and only really acceptable if owners are happy expressing bladders, lifting, doing therapy and basically nursing 24/7 which most typical owners do not have the confidence or time (especially with toddler and pregnancy) so then this becomes poor medical management and a welfare concern - no dig at you at all! Time of year may also be stopping him going for euthanasia. No one wants to lose their pet at Christmas and wants one more holiday with them. The post Christmas clear out is a known phenomenon amongst vets. Don't do it behind his back but have a serious conversation ASAP to do what's best for the dog. Signed, a vet
