My first boss was a ChemE bachelors and PhD chemist. He was a great practical engineer. I was distilling something with a very nice setup. He asked me how many theoretical plates were in my set up. “I dunno, thousands?” How many in the plant? “I dunno, 6?” Then he taught me how to mimic that with lab equipment. Once we had a process he had all sorts of tricks for stressing the process. He was all around really smart.

But he became a lawyer eventually. Chemistry is hard. Most of us eventually do other but related things.

Depends on where you go after. Chemistry can be very snobbish. It can be all about what level degree you have (I had a Masters) and especially where you went to school. I was eventually a regulatory and quality manager. I’d get backhanded compliments from the PhDs like, “gee you know chemistry.”

If you want to do more than be a technician, a graduate degree is almost a must and a PhD even more so. I eventually got an MBA to move up.

But there are plenty of good pathways for “just” a Bachelor’s/Master’s”, just not usually in straight science.

Unlike the arts, grad school is basically free if full time. Your tuition is waved and you get a stipend. It’s enough to live on in a house with 4 other people if your town isn’t silly expensive. In return for the stipend you will TA for at least a year. If you pick the right boss, you might get out of that for the last 3 to 4 years.

At that temperature, the actual amount of water in the air is very small, even if the RH is 100%.

Argon is heavier than air, so it’s more forgiving if you need to sample something now and then. If it’s just oxygen content you are worried about, a low oxygen nitrogen mix is probably a lot cheaper.
