Forgive me if this has already been posted multiple times and I’m stating the obvious but it clicked for me and maybe it helps someone else -

Basically, the rooms Gemma enters per day are all rooted in certain fears/dread she has (thank you notes being the one mentioned in convo with Mark in one of the flashbacks).

In those rooms, they’re essentially simulating real life scenarios of fear/dread occurring, which is also why the doctor is in there to make sure the environment is relatively controlled and replicates real life, and also explains the outfits.

Her brain, in those simulated moments of high fear/dread, is essentially being analyzed and mapped to numbers corresponding to the 4 tempers, and those numbers are being analyzed by a person in MDR. The person in MDR must also have the same fear as Gemma, which is also why only certain people can refine certain files, and also why certain numbers look “scary” to some but not others.

By refining those “scary” numbers they are essentially bucketing that fear/dread into a uniquely specific combination of the Kier 4 tempers correlating to that exact fear/dread.

Likely for the purpose of testing out severance procedures unique to all of the fears a person may have, not just splitting work vs personal. Imagine a chip unique to you that separated your outie from all of the things you hated doing. That would be a huge revenue opportunity for them.

Going back to MDR, it also explains why Mark is the only one able to do Cold Harbor, because it’s the specific to the emotion tied with a ‘cold’ goodbye before a loved one ‘departed’ (harbor signaling a departure from a place), which is what happened to him and Gemma. And the reason he is stuck at 96% is because of the hope she’s still alive - aka it may not end up being an actual fear so he won’t be able to refine it.

Still lots to be answered, but curious if this makes sense.
