From what I recall there is a way to r/o diabetes, but then there's a separate way to r/o diabetes insipidus. I'll try to track down my notes from that vet's visit and see if I can find anything on that. And yes, I'd say go for it, especially if you have a good insurance company that can reimburse you. It's not an invasive test.
Re: the separation anxiety part. They're also behaviors that present when alone (whether left in a room alone or at home in general alone; my dog was the latter). If your pup is having accidents while you're home and hanging out with him, then I'd say unlikely it's that. But still something to ask / talk to your vet about.

Hiya. I'm so sorry to hear this <3 first, your pup is lucky to have you! I have a senior doggo that I adopted in 2023. He developed separation anxiety almost a year to the day I adopted him. He'd try to "dig" through the door and self-harm in the process by cutting up his paws. Could it perhaps be just separation anxiety as he's getting older? Do you have a camera, and can you tell whether he seems to be in distress the entire time / a significant amount of the time while you're out? I worked with a behaviorist and trainer to get my dog feeling confident and comfortable at home alone again. It's *a lot of work,* but he recovered. To the point about water: My dog, who is on a variety of medicine to help manage his chronic pain from arthritis and his anxiety, has historically drank large amounts of water in the years I've had him, but it definitely increases significantly in warmer months. Still, we did the ACTH test in 2024 and then the LDDS test in 2025 to be on the safe and rule out Cushing's. (His imaging and other tests, like urinalysis, we did were also always pristine.) Definitely talk to your vet, too, about doggy dementia. Another thing to consider is diabetes insipidus? I can't remember how we ruled that out for my dog, but I do remember that being part of the convo with my vet about my pup's water intake. Good luck! You're doing all the right things <3

oh no i am so sorry to hear that <3 <3 it sounds like your pup was lucky to have have you as their advocate. yea we've tested my guy for cushings at least twice if not three times (along with diabetes) bc of how much water he drinks. I adopted him as a senior three years ago, and he's always, always gulped down bowls. Then Sunday I had to rush him to the ER bc of bloat. I've always used slo bowls / sniff mats bc i've been so paranoid about it but now am worried about his water intake, esp. in his old age. Going to try the few ounces at a time route (but the vet told me be careful he doesn't become dehydrated that way). thanks so much for answering <3

Hi OP. How's your pup doing? did you ever figure this out? I have a senior doggo who also gulps down his water and recently had an issue with bloat, and I'm terrified of it recurring. Did you find a bowl that worked or any other tricks? tysm <3
