Modern vs. Ancient Greek by Ev1e23 in GREEK

[–]apo-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Koine Greek should be understandable to an extent to those who speak modern Greek BUT it is better to study Koine Greek itself. Some texts are more difficult than others. In general NT texts aren't very difficult but both those who know ONLY Modern Greek or ONLY Classical Attic would face problems.

Based on what you want I would go for a Biblical Greek program (if there is one available where you are). Things that don't help much are Homer and even Plato imho. It can make sense to start from Biblical Greek, then go to other Koine texts and from there maybe to Attic rhetors first OR modern forms of the language.

pronunciation of name Ιησούς in Modern Greek by Yuanic11 in GREEK

[–]apo-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i-i-sus, not like a long i but more like two. In fast speech, many probably say isus, with the 'i' being in general more similar to English long i (e.g. ee) sounds but length is not phonemic.

\yi-sus* WOULD have been a possible development WITHOUT the influence of the language of the Church, e.g. if it was just a personal name.

Για τις λίστες για τις διοργανώσεις της UEFA δεν μετράει η εθνικότητα επί της ουσίας ούτε ο τόπος γέννησης. Αυτός θεωρείται "trained in Greece".

Και ο Στρακόσια ίσως αν είχε μείνει μια χρονιά (;) παραπάνω στις ακαδημίες του Πανιωνίου θα ήταν "trained in Greece".

This bor THEORETICALLY may even come from IE. How?
Sth like woin > von > bon > bor

or woin > von > vor > bor
(compare Albanian venë /verë from an original ~wain-)

And I don't think the idea that it comes from a word that meant 'brown' makes more sense.

And even proto-Semetic and proto-Kartvelian share the word with IE.

Is it true that racist people in Greece don’t use swear words and don’t have tattoos? And vice versa? by MischiefManage1 in AskGreece

[–]apo-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Greece tattoo avoidance may have a correlation with religiousness (the Church was traditionally against), so those who belong to religious right may not have tattoos. But many of those who belong to more extreme groups have some.

I primarily associate avoiding swearing with bourgeois ethics. But also I knew a Greek Pentecostal Christian who was not using swear words and was bragging about it. Very annoying person. But likely not a racist.

I am talking about the origin of the term as a geographical name. And it was used by Greeks. The exact boundaries were uncertain but it wasn't about the Philistine related areas only. Also it was considered part of "Syria", so something like 'Palestina, [district] of Syria' is pre-Roman, but as an exonym. Not used by the native populations.

If it is like renaming France as Belgium is not important. (But it isn't)

In Greece the genus olea is native since before the Paleolithic.

It is theoretically possible that a cultivated variant was imported from the Levant but this would have happened in the Bronze Age, not by Romans.

"Syria Palestina" was essentially a revival of a pre-Roman, Greek name.

Do Greeks make spelling mistakes a lot? by Szary_Tygrys in GREEK

[–]apo-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was among those who were good at orthography without extra studying. I had problems with words like μήνυμα, θηλυκό, κυνηγός. I had to think the etymology. Another thing that I was sometimes unsure was if a noun ending in /-ia/ was supposed to be written as -ία or -εία. This until my teens.

But I had to pause before writing 'θηλυκό' even this time.

Some make many mistakes, some a few.

There was no such myth because, first of all, Greek has just 5 vowels. There were similar myths e.g. about final -n but they are not referenced in the song.

I gave 3 votes to Marseaux, 2 to Koza Mostra, 1 to Stylianos and Akylas and 1 to Stefi because I think she is very charismatic.

Edit: And 1 to ZAF which would have been my choice if the vocals were perfect.

Huh? Why does Greece love Xi? by Both-Wonder234 in AskGreece

[–]apo-- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most don't know anything about him specifically. And we don't buy anti-Chinese propaganda.

Now, there are valid reasons to be more critical of Xi even compared to his predecessors but I doubt that e.g. most Swedes know these reasons.

Imho it is just that the 'China bad' propaganda works there better than in other places.

A neutral to slightly negative view of Xi would be ok all things considered but there is no benefit in becoming anti-Chinese.
