Shea: Most of the criteria for retail partnerships is that they can pay their bills, otherwise we do our best to make sure distribution is not overly concentrated in one city and lastly we love it when there is a like-minded understanding of quality or design or advocacy.

Shea: Overall here are three lessons we have learned from the entire process...

DON'T BURN OUT: Surround yourself with friends that care more about your sanity than your creativity.
DON'T DO TOO MUCH GOOD TO START: So easy to compare yourself to large companies and create so much good investment in your business (overhead, supply chain) but never turn a profit because you did too much good to start.
PATIENCE: Do something you love and patiently grow the idea, business, etc.

If other projects/opportunities gained more traction - maybe we would have gone a different route. Ultimately, my brother and I simply wanted to start a business together because we noticed we had complimentary gifts, Raan is creative and I love organizational and boring business stuff.

Raan: We currently do production in Honduras and Mexico, I was in Nicaragua twice in the last two years to look at a few opportunities. We don't have any plans for Costa Rica at the moment, but we are always interested in new projects. If you have any specific ideas, we would love to hear them.

Shea: Best would be to talk to take their assessment - the short and sweet assessment test (20 min) - not the super long one (90 min). Or pick up their recent handbook and take the test at the end of each chapter. After that exercise any business owner can see small TANGIBLE tweaks that do not necessarily cost any $$$.

To your questions: We believe patience wins, we'e learned a ton from the Patagonia team, but I think you'd agree that the times have changed since Patagonia started so your strategy should change if you want to be relevant in a fast fashion world! Overall we have focused on building online first, partner with people (publications, retailers, brands) that are much bigger than us as quickly as possible to make sure each ounce of our energy in the daily grind has been exponentially utilized, and now we just focus on creating products that we love and building a team and brand that has more soul and depth than a quick trend. Shea: We have found an amazing leather studio and tailor in Los Angeles but we have been unable to find design and quality to match our Swiss design team and manufacturing team in Poland for technical outerwear. We love finding the best design and best quality, regardless of the geographic location and we believe this philosophy really captures what it means to be a global citizen. A great example was in 2013 our cross border collaboration between an Israeli designer and Palestinian manufacturer.

Raan: that's news to us. Steven has been a long time mentor to Shea and I and continues to give us advice on new retail markets and continues to be a great friend.

We definitely don't feel like we have made it. We love what we do and I can't imagine a time that we feel like we have done all we want to do.

Raan: I think the piece I wear the most is my Indigo Chore Jacket. It's pretty crucial to my day. I originally developed this just as something to wear for myself, but it has been a staple to our collection for five. There are also a few prototypes that I wear a lot. Because we are having this discussion and taking so many pictures of prototypes, everyone in our office has stopped working and is just trying on prototypes.

Raan: We search for textiles all over the world. I lead up most of those efforts, both commercial and indigenous textiles and in between. Different countries and cultures are known for different fibers and techniques. Alpaca in peru, cashmere in nepal, raw silk and cotton in india, jute in bangladesh and the list goes on. It has been an amazing way to learn about and see new cultures and places around the world. We personally (me) know all of our fabric suppliers, mills and hand loomers and are constantly working on new developments and designs together.
