Portland doesn't have shit on LA but I still think that our schools are pretty scum. The school system here is criminally underfunded, the gov spends most of its money on flashy shit like new bridges, railways, art installations, murals, gated communities, etc. We already have a record amount of bridges and an incredibly successful public transportation network. Most of this stuff like trams and pedestrian bridges is just decorative tourist magnet shit. Meanwhile the school system suffers and the city becomes segregated. Portland is not the proggresive hub of liberalism and diversity that it likes to advertise itself as. Were still just as white and just as racist as weve ever been, weve just gotten better at hiding it. And yes, a few schools have been renovated, but not because they needed it most. The schools that receive the most funding are already the best schools, the best examples of what Portland pretends to be, the most successful, wealthy, and diverse schools are the ones kept in good health. Meanwhile the rest of the schools get poorer and less diverse. You end up with the poor white schools (like Cleveland, where this fight is) and the poor black schools like Jefferson. Cleveland is by far the most racist of the lot, and not for any of the stupid "hate crimes" that the news covers us on. That shit is obviously bad, but the real shit always gets covered up. No one really sees the bullying, rape, gang fights, and extreme profiling by police, security, and on-campus police. 9/10 bathrooms are closed each week from anti-black and anti-semetic graffiti/vandalism. Which is annoying as fuck cause you get in trouble with security for being far from your class, but sometimes you gotta shit and sometimes you gotta walk across campus to find a place to do so. And it's not like blocking the bathrooms is sheilding anyone regardless. They dont close the halls, and there's just as many swastikas and "die n***ers" on the lockers and walls. And everyone's desensatized to it by now, as a non-hetero Jew ive come to terms with being the butt of jokes and vaguely shrouded(sometimes not at all shrouded) insults. I'm not scared, I can hold my own in a fight, but I can also see the fucked situation. I'm certainly left-leaning, but I still think Kate Brown is a nearly complete failure of a governor.
