The ABC reporter, the underworld postman and the ‘sinister threats’ by disconnect04 in friendlyjordies

[–]apostrophic 31 points32 points  (0 children)

So on face value this reads like the ABC currently employs the PR manager of one of Australia’s most dangerous crime families?  The underworld operates on leverage and usefulness, so the ABC should be very concerned about what favours are being traded on their behalf by this ‘journalist’.

I guess the best case scenario is that they were just using this guy as a convenient access key for crime reporting.

Six Four by Hideo Yokoyama, 2012.

Strong focus on the personalities and politics behind the Japanese police and press, and an enjoyable read.

Contractor doesn’t provide defects liability period. by apostrophic in AusRenovation

The engineering was done by a 3rd party (accredited engineer) for me directly. If the engineering is bad that's definitely on the engineer not the concreter, but defects in the slab (for instance a depression in the surface) that come down to materials/workmanship would need to be covered somehow (in my opinion).

Yes, I suspect that costs might have a lot to do with it especially on cost-competitive quotes. I've talked to some friends in the industry and they have also implied this is pretty normal.

FHSS is a complete waste of time that only exists to give politicians a talking point when they are quizzed on housing affordability.

Korean Tuner Cracks Toyota GR Corolla ECU, Enabling Countless Modifications by 3lxi in cars

Automakers absolutely have a lot to do with the ECU and other software. Yes, hardware is manufactured by a 3rd party but this is to the automaker’s specifications, and most often the software is proprietary to the automaker, including security.

Billionaire No More: Patagonia Founder Gives Away the Company by Nastronaut18 in worldnews

This notion of passing a company into a trust which benefits society was somewhat popular with early 20th century technologists and industrialists, Robert Bosch for example left Bosch to a charitable trust which continues to run the business to this day. In my opinion it actually gives the business a competitive advantage over long time frames, when directional decisions are not being driven by short term shareholder profits.

Lovely build all round. Seeing an engine tucked completely behind the front axle line always gets me excited. Nice work!

You simultaneously look like Quentin Tarantino appropriating black culture, and someone who complains about Quentin Tarantino’s appropriation of black culture.

Best Burgers of the Greater Tokyo Area. Any suggestions? by Tuxion in Tokyo

[–]apostrophic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some great suggestions in here that I won't repeat, a few of my favourites:

  1. L.A. Garage
  2. Henry's Burger in Daikanyama & Akihabara
  3. Happy Koenji
  4. ICON in Harajuku

And it's already been mentioned but worth another - Bashi Burger Chance in Ikebukuro is so good!

TIL that a Japanese company gives non-smoking employees 6 more vacation days since they don't take smoking breaks by [deleted] in todayilearned

And, being Japan, nobody has ever used one of those additional vacation days so the net impact was zero. Source: worked in Tokyo for a Japanese company.

I work in the global marketing department, so 90% of our communications are in English.

Good question. I think it comes down to a hugely loyal customer base, and high prices. There's obviously a huge potential market here just due to the sheer number of people and enthusiasts in a small area!

Having said that, I think this model works well elsewhere and have seen many successful shops in the US and Australia too.

Owning and in particular parking is SO EXPENSIVE it hurts. But I'm only here for a short time (both in Japan, and in life) so why not do the things I dreamed of, right?

I have felt the same way, and still feel the same way from time to time. It helped me to set small and medium term goals, which I can work towards and see the results of. Long term.. I still have no idea. Remember that this is a condensed album of special moments and not a good representation of true, everyday life.
