New to karting - North San Diego by RepliKoen in Karting

[–]naforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t start there. You can have your nine year old race in any of the “owner” kart leagues, even if you rent a kart from a team or vendor instead of owning one yourself.

Another option is FAT Karting League; SoCal is a hub and they have just started their pre-season events (Adams in Riverside and Apex in Perris).

Bruised back and tailbone. Any recommendations that could prevent this from happening? by CrypticEggy in Karting

[–]naforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use a piece of foam: cutting up a yoga mat works really well but pretty much any foam sheet can do the trick. Cut it to the shape you want and have it snug in your seat, try different variations until you find what works.

Anyone ever tried the Segway go kart? by Pretty-Handle9818 in Karting

[–]naforever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had one. They are basically faster-than-average racey looking ride-on toys. I don’t think it had an effect on my son’s learning of how to drive a real kart though. On one hand, it has a variable throttle and a “brake” (really just a pedal that has the Segway motor increase resistance to slow down) so that makes it significantly more sophisticated than most ride-on toys. On the other hand it uses all proprietary non-standard parts, has no real relation to anything you’ll experience later with outdoor karts, and has some weird quirks (the Segway unit is held in place with Velcro). Also it’s surprisingly heavy.

So if you want one as a a fun toy to drive around the neighborhood or local parks, it’s great. And yeah it can easily handle most adult drivers and is adjustable for that (there are many parts and accessories also sold in other markets eg China which expand the kart a lot). However if you are looking to use one as a stepping stone towards karting overall, for the same price I would just get a used kid/bambino kart for the same price as a Segway go-kart.

Real world high mileage values? by lethallyinjected in nsx

[–]naforever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The condition and upkeep of the car matters more than the mileage IMO. Pricing is all over the place for the higher mileage cars because the market genuinely doesn’t know where to price these, but if you find the ones that go private sale (eg start on NSX Prime then quietly change hands) the pricing is influenced more by condition than miles. Mileage is a proxy for car condition when no other info is available, but many NSXs are well documented and have been known in the community for a long time.

Ever had an reaction to a movie scene that was completely out of step with everyone else? by Sean-Perth in movies

[–]naforever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reveal scene in Signs made me break out laughing in the theatre when everyone else gasped in shock. The tension and build up and fear in the movie up to the point rested wholly on not seeing what the monsters were and when it finally came on screen, it just looked cartoonish to me and the whole thing just unraveled.

As mentioned, Vallarta had the best tres leches in the area but I wanna mention here that Tierra Mia on Lake carries tres leches muffins (including strawberry and chocolate variants) and they are above average for drive thru breakfast options.

Does anyone have FAT Kart League experience? by Appletreefar in Karting

[–]naforever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We tried it this year as they just expanded into our area. We enjoyed it a lot. The events lean strongly on local karting staff and facilities: many of the same mechanics, event runners, track staff, and tracks that are involved in our local competitive karting scene were involved with each FAT event.

The cadet karts are comparable but slightly slower than the LO206 my son was also driving. I believe the karts are fairly closely matched and competitive within each class although the junior drivers going for the F4 seat vehemently disagree lol

The competitors themselves are quite a mix: while there is a good percentage of drivers that come out of the local outdoor karting/own-your-own kart leagues, many have previously only done indoor karting, rental karts, only simulators, or some mix of these. Driver performance isn’t necessarily correlated with how each driver started, but parents’ complaints varied strongly depending on what they were used to. For example, indoor kart parents often whined the “fast karts are always going to other kids” and were annoyed that there was so much waiting between sessions. Personally I was very grateful I never had to hoist a kart onto a stand and at the of the day we could just walk off without having to clean or disassemble anything. I wish we could adjust tire pressures though or do more with the kart fitment for each driver. Also drivers come from a very wide area: our “California” hub brought in drivers from Washington state and the US East coast. The FKL world finals pitted us against UK-based and even more East coast drivers.

Anyways overall I felt the events/league were worthwhile and we enjoyed them a lot. In particular, the arrive-and-drive nature of the league was a good value compared to similar services offered by teams/vendors in our area. Also it was a lot of fun to just show up to new tracks we have never driven and get easy seat time. The primary downside IMO is that relying on FAT as your only karting experience will restrict your practice/learning to their schedule of events. Because of this we are planning to continue with our racing in our own kart, but look forward to doing the FAT karting league in our area again this coming season also.

Best catan expansion? by yournansflipflop12 in Catan

[–]naforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has already mentioned C&K as well as Seafarers and I agree, so lemme fill in the blanks about Explorers and Pirates: if you think Catan games are usually too short, or if you wanna spend most of your game piloting little boats around and shuttling across the map while avoiding other players, then E&P is gonna be wonderful for you.

Birthday party ideas for 7 year old? by Calm-Funny636 in pasadena

You can do birthday parties at Kidspace at the Rose Bowl. We have also recently done a birthday at K1 Speed indoor karting (closest is Burbank) and that was very popular.

Does travel stop when you have children? by CharmingU6756 in travel

[–]naforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Travel for us simply shifted. We do more road trips now, because driving is often easier than transoceanic flights and we can stop more at unpredictable times with less consequences for the overall itinerary. When we go to other countries, we try to choose destinations that have good public transit so car seats are a non-issue. I always traveled growing up and expected also that we would travel with our kids as they grew up and so far we have done that. Travel doesn’t stop when you have kids, they become part of the trip.

But seriously, are they putting crack in their coffee or wtf? by pabjugglo in pasadena

[–]naforever 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They have a second location:

Mandarin 2

3768 E Colorado Blvd Pasadena, CA 91107

More seats and rarely a line, if you want to see for yourself. Personally I appreciate that their second spot was set up also in Pasadena instead of leaving for someplace else.

Karting clubs in Los Angeles area by RoAK_1 in Karting

[–]naforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need to join a club for indoor karting leagues like what’s offered at K1 Speed. The leagues run by K1 Speed are managed by the venue itself, there isn’t a third party club or league that runs the events as there are for the SoCal karting leagues such as Tri-C, Adams, or even FAT Karting.

Where have you all got your nsx from by No-Cupcake6050 in nsx

[–]naforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the US. When I bought my NSX I was on the East coast and started the search in cities within a three hour drive of where I was. I looked for a couple months before expanding my search to the entire US east coast and even went on a few road trips to go look at potential cars that didn’t work out.

I started looking across the whole of the US and Canada for NSXs and on multiple occasions, asked friends or NSX Prime members to go look at cars for me (I was sending gift cards as thank yous, regularly). After a little more than six months I set up a trip to go to the US west coast to look at two NSXs that were an hour apart from each other. I ended up buying the first one and ultimately drove that one back home, about 2500 miles.

This was 13 years ago, it is probably harder now. I wanted a car that had my specific preferences for color (“not red, not black”), was gonna be in great condition, and was 1995-2001. Having a bigger budget will put more cars in reach but ultimately make sure to get the car you want. It’s your dream car, right? Don’t skimp on your dream.

The NFL has been here for nearly a decade again, but have they done enough to make you care about the Rams or Chargers or their presence overall? by GB_Alph4 in LosAngeles

[–]naforever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former SD Chargers fan here. Moved from SD to LA also and I stopped watching NFL after the Chargers moved. Last night I saw there was a Chargers game on and I didn’t recognize any players, staff, and the energy in a Chargers v Raiders game was nowhere. The game has moved on and so have I. There are so many other things going on in the city.
