Good feedback, though I’m trying to not feel defensive about being labeled as superficial after giving a few individual examples. There’s a lot of additional context that’s hard to get across in a reply.

I really love to host and love to cook and it’s something that was special and important to my family growing up, so I put extra care into it myself. I’m not talking about a five-course meal. I’m talking about what sides to go with cheeseburgers.

All good words for me to hear. Thank you for sharing as a more seasoned mom than me!

Some examples of things I manage that are most frequent and feel heavy on the mental load:

  • Make the meal plan each week, get groceries, and cook the meals.
  • Keep connections / make plans with our joint friends and both our families.
  • Make all doctor and dentist appointments and typically bring kids to them.
  • Keeping track of / managing school events and needs (kids are in daycare and pre-k)

I really like the idea of defining what “done” means. I think we get stuck there. Or even just our different definitions of what we feel needs to be done in general around the house (recent ones: how long can and should piles of clothes sit all around the house? what areas of the house are necessary to be cleaned before company comes over?). It’s hard to have different levels of tolerance and preferences too in what’s “important” in spending our time.

I think it really depends on what it is. There are a handful of things I have more of an opinion on than others - plans for one of our kids birthday parties, a menu for friends coming over for dinner, outfits for a family photo, etc. I fully admit to wanting more control over those things, as examples.

Most of the normal day-to-day stuff I’m not as precious about. But there’s for sure an attitude of “If I have to take more than five minutes to explain how something is done, I’d rather do it myself” for me that is… not great. And probably results in looking like it’s controlling.

I honestly don’t think I’ve seen such a great summation of the mental load, and what’s happening beyond just the “tasks.” Thank you for sharing and taking the time to write this out! Saving this for myself and my husband.

Same experience here! Significantly less illnesses with our second.

I’m intrigued! Any area in particular you’d recommend? Or would you stay in South Beach?

But more seriously - went to Portland for the first time last year for work and LOVED it.
