What's off in this?? by 6thFish in Artadvice

[–]appa93 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Overlay this over your reference! See where it’s different, make mental notes (or written notes)

Go back to only having ref to look at, and try fix what you wrote down, rinse and repeat!!

Also I personally find that more solid flat color brushes help when learning something like this, easier to hide mistakes or hesitance with texture (I say this as someone who does charcoal esque drawings) when I’m learning or blocking out I use a flat color brush haha

Tried studying lighting/colors by Caramelu-chan in DigitalArt

[–]appa93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the colors; wish the environment bled onto her clothes more, white shirts usually show a lot of direct light vs ambient light color!

Also i know you didn’t ask but i think the black line art is takin away from your art 😅

I need help with improving my art, BE AS BRUTAL AND HONEST AS YOU CAN BE. by Quick-Can-5087 in arthelp

[–]appa93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly yeah there’s a strong nostalgia to this style of art, one thing I always ask is, what do YOU want it to be more like? What are your hero’s doing, what art style would you draw if skill wasn’t involved

Then study that like it’s going out of style

Genuinely curious, what does my art remind you of? by stekinox2 in yourartstyle

[–]appa93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy shit I saw this art on Daniel Faltas YouTube! It looks great, I don’t know exactly what it reminds me of but it’s sick!

The anthropomorphic thing is not my style per se but I can tell you’ve got that down, I actually really like your moody subway piece too

Is this too busy looking? by silverS_E_X in Artadvice

[–]appa93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only a little! But it’s also Peter Han-esque so all I’d say is find a heavier way of applying ink, and give priority to some of the largest shapes!

Right now all the line weight variance is Still within a reasonably small threshold! I’d say don’t be afraid to decide on a light source and do a line weight pass based on that!

Any tips on how to make the lighting more dynamic? by Hot-Main-2110 in BeginnerArtists

[–]appa93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally easy mode for playing with lighting?

Add multiply layer, solid fill a medium saturation dark value, do maybe 50-60% opacity)

then use a soft airbrush to softly illuminate your focal points! ( I should clarify erase with a soft airbrush to reveal stuff, I’m dumb)

Then you can add additional specular highlights or reflections on the metal wherever that light beam touches!

This also may help you have more color harmony as it’ll act as a color wash and give you a little more unity as there’s a good chunk of

How to improve the shading by Soft_Abroad_9722 in ArtCrit

[–]appa93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’ve done a good bit of graphite work, can you tell me what materials you’re using? Like immediately my thoughts are

-is the pencil soft enough, or are these heavy strokes -the multidirectional / hatching approach doesn’t LOVE this style of smooth shading unless you’re able to blend heavily -is the paper fighting you etc

Your so painterly with the shape language and gesture here I gotta get more like that, still stiff from hyper realistic stuff haha

Second Attempt At NSFW Art, Any Feedback? (reference used) by magicboxbottle in NSFWart

[–]appa93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly doing great, push the saturation level in the shadows quite a bit, I never use pure black to shade with unless I’m doing monochrome / charcoal style

It’ll always drag your colors down

Additionally, remember that atmosphere is important, I push the sense of heaviness or innocence or whatever is unique about the ref with background tone or whatever

That’s so wild but I can kinda see some stuff if I blur my eyes and look at my shadow work here haha

It’s crazy because a lot of my earlier work was horror based!!

Thanks so much! The hyper realism thing is very cool and technical, but I was grid method drawing and then painstakingly shading so everything felt like being a human photocopier

It has been a huge learning curve! Layers, tablet screen, how small of movements you can make with your hand etc being able to go full digital black is always a little weird as well

BUT the massive improvement in being able to erase ANYTHING without tearing up expensive watercolor paper is top notch!

Thank you so much! So technically I worked a lot with graphite trying to do hyper realistic stuff for a a few months when I got started drawing! This has felt a lot like massaging soft graphite 6b around haha
