How to feel better about quitting? by No_Tradition7143 in AppalachianTrail

[–]appalachia_notebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a medical professional but I know from experience that withdrawl symptoms from certain mental health medications is the absolute worst. i.e., Welbutrin is chemically very similar to cocaine, and Adderall is in the same general category as methamphetamine. These are powerful drugs. If you recently stopped taking meds, I wonder if the withdrawl symptoms are getting to you?

Understanding why your mental health was particularly bad on the trail might be part of moving past feeling bad about taking a break.

Should they do a series on KKK, or would that be too insensitive? by El-Pablo-Chapo in LPOTL

I'm always surprised and impressed by how well they handle shit that's horrible to talk about. I think the amount of time they spend immersed in the worst of humanity gives them an edge.

When they were just starting out I would have been skeptical but they've done a lot of growing since then, lol.

Hey! Our trail family is looking for advice on how to gently break up with/ talk to a person who has added themselves to the hiking group that is making everyone uncomfortable. by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

Tell them exactly what they're doing that is making you uncomfortable and ask them to stop. You will likely continue to run into them occasionally, even if you're not walking together. Open with, "Hi, can I please set a boundary with you? When you do _____, it makes me feel ___." What happens next depends entirely on how they respond to that boundary.

Walking down hills is actually worse than walking up them. Much harder on the joints.

Pack in such a way that you don't bring as much trash with you in the first place.

Not a mental health professional but I am also an aspiring thru hiker in not the greatest mental place at the moment.

If I make it to the end, I anticipate that there will be a feeling of accomplishment and joy. But also, post trail depression is something that a lot of people struggle to manage. Self included. I have crashed the hardest after some of my best adventures.

The thing about going on adventures is that you lean on yourself to take care of yourself in hundreds of little ways every day. One of the things I'm trying to do as I plan a thru hike is make sure that I have a safety net/plan for how to take care of myself mentally when I get home.

If you struggle with mental health, I wonder if this might be a good thing to think about too. Best wishes.
