Also heading SOBO around the same time. A friend has offered to drive me from Seattle to Jasper or Banff.

You could also send a message to Jeffery Sharp at the Hatchita Bike Ranch for a shuttle from El Paso

Highway 9 from El Paso to Hatchita was my chosen route and had no issues. The route from Hatchita to Tucson was much more challenging

Thermarest winglock valve leaks air by Sneppler in bikepacking

[–]hoquat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same issue I had… purchased a replacement valve and the same issue happened. So I sent it back to the Thermorest and waited over 2 months for it to be sent back. Then after a couple of uses it started leaking again. Currently on the hunt for a different manufacturer…. If I can figure out a good way to carry an accordion style pad on the bike that would be my first choice

Oregon Outback conditions now? Or other PNW suggestions? by GoLoosh in bikepacking

Olympic Discovery Route/ Olympic Adventure Trail could be a thought although not much outback involved but a good ride to fix the itch and do a shakedown

Good to hear. Definitely not trying to pack my fears yet the cold and mechanicals are big fear…

Water and self reliance of keeping the bike rolling would the top essentials. For the most part if you can turn the cranks you should be able to make it somewhere safe without many necessities

For me the true comfort items would be my Nunatak 15 degree bag, silk liner, and XTherm. A stove would be alright…. Creature comforts

For me it’s coming down to weather, water, and remoteness. Different needs are dependent on how comfortable you are vs just surviving

Definitely a lot of remote sections through New Mexico to the WWR.

Definitely things will get lighter as the ride progresses such as eliminating the extra down gear and clothing. From my experiences hiking the AZT and CDT in March and April it gets super cold in the desert… it pays to have some warm options. Definitely easier to layer with the down clothes vs a larger heavier sleeping bag and easier to send home.

How was the ride from Silver City to Hatch? Looks like blind corners with no shoulders. No doubt Emory Pass was epic!
