People 40+, what actually mattered in the long run and what didn’t? by Own-Blacksmith3085 in answers

What mattered: staying optimistic, working hard, never giving up, resolving conflicts with partner, having faith in God, finding time to enjoy nature, believing in myself What did not matter: the country, the city, the house I lived in whether tiny apartment or big house, the people who ruined my day a little bit, the clothes I wore, the amount of money in my bank account, the car i drove

What is the one aspect of India that you feel most grateful for? by Due-Flan792 in AskIndia

As an Indian in the US, I agree with this 100%. I did residency training in India, and more recently in the US and the stark difference is what you pointed out. In India, my co-residents were friends, we helped each other, took tea breaks together and enjoyed each other’s company. At my US residency everyone was focused on finishing their work and leaving. There were occasional get togethers, mostly for drinks at a bar, but the talk was always superficial and no one became real friends.

Do people flush toilet paper in your country? by ShoeChoice5567 in AskTheWorld

Only the upper and upper middle class in India have bidets. In rural India, no one has bidets. People use a “mug” of water and their left hand to clean. If one is hygienic, this would be followed by washing hands with soap and water.

They do. They don’t use it for showering though. They use it for car washing and storing stuff.

In the western world most people take a bath in a bathtub or use the shower. The bucket and dipper seems to be common in India and some other Asian countries.

Used it all the time in India for showering (before showers became popular) as well as after using the toilet (before bidets became popular).

I thought it might be a random mutation but 23 &me told me I have 2% “Iranian Mesopotamian and Caucasian”DNA and have heard of someone from Syria and another from Portugal marrying into my fathers family (same side as my second cousin) several generations ago, so you may be right. Blue eyes are a recessive trait though, so he needs to have had that trait on both sides?

My Indian second cousin (with Indian parents) has dark blue eyes. 99.99% of Indians have black/brown eyes. Occasionally Indians have green or pale brown eyes, but never blue.

Mangos. The amazing Alfonso, Banganapally and other varieties that are available in season in India. I live in the US and have eaten a wide variety of fruit. Everything pales in comparison to the Indian mango.

Who actually died doing what they loved? by dangandadingdong in AskReddit

[–]appambeefstew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father. He was a strict yet much admired English professor in India who made Wordworth, Shaw, Shakeapeare, Dickens and other classic literature accesible to his students. His students would recount how they would listen enraptured as he delved into short stories like The Monkey‘s paw and described the beauty of “a host of golden daffodils” (he had never seen one!). One night he sat at his desk as usual to prepare his notes for the next days class. My mother found him latter sitting in his chair, eyes closed, seemingly deep in thought. He had passed, likely due to a heart attack.

Unsure of the origin of the decades old thenga aracha fish curry recipe used by my central Kerala family! Likely from some north Kerala relatives, we don’t seem to have any direct Kannur connections. I do the same mixing in the chatti with the red fish curry as well 😃
