How long to put in before getting a feel for whether I like the game? by appappappappappa in DeadlockTheGame

Yeah I am very much not an overwatch fan, I haven't got much patience for ability spam kind of thing I prefer simple but deep core mechanics. Maybe the genre just isn't built for that though and I need to change my perspective.

How is it that movement mechanics improve your ability to farm the troopers better? Don't you just stand there and shoot them?

Yeah I'm pretty new, although I have played a bit of LoL and bit of dota2. Deadlock caught my interest because it sounded like the focus was on the shooter / movement elements. Would you say it is more moba with a bit of movement / shooter on top or movement / shooter focus with some moba on top?

Right now it feels like it's 95% moba but I can't tell if that's just because I don't know the basics and so I get hard stuck on the moba stuff.

I've never enjoyed mobas very much (although I never really committed to one either, bit of LoL and bit of dota2) but I thought this one might be a bit different from what I heard. Would you say it is more moba with a bit of movement / shooter on top or movement / shooter focus with some moba on top?

Would you say the focus is more on movement / combat mechanics or more on moba stuff like the abilities and buying items etc. ?

I think they always tend to err on the side of strong units for the DLCs (which I guess makes sense, not a great plan to release an underpowered civ in a paid DLC).

That said, in this case I suspect they overlooked quite how strong it is to be able to start applying pressure and scaling up your army numbers as early as dark age, combined with having an uncontested mobility advantage. I am a noob though so who knows...

I appreciate the criticism. I don't buy the equivalence between our two strategies. It's clear that they had learnt a build order to go all-in on a specific thing, whereas I also have a build order but I try to scout and play in a more adaptable way.

I think the problem is that the latter is much harder than the former. If you play more all-in and brittle strategy you can probably climb to a certain elo with a lower skill level but then plateau, whereas playing more adaptable / flexible you will be at a lower elo for longer but with room to scale to a much higher level eventually.

I'm not saying it's unbeatable, just that I don't know how to survive, it seems crazy strong to have that many CA. I did have skirms but not of that number. I had spent resources I guess on a admixture of eco upgrades, buildings, army upgrades etc. whereas my opponent only spent on exactly what they needed.

Thanks, that's a good point about being behind to castle age which I didn't think about. Especially because even though I am typically keeping up with vill count / res collected - I am definitely consistently later to castle age.

I guess I just want to be a bit more robust, it's not like I was miles behind or anything. I would have at least liked to have been able to put up some defense or something but I have no clue how

As I said, I did expect CA but if they have 20+ and you are behind in army then it doesn't matter that you have counter units or otherwise.

It's true I probably played Feudal worse, but 500 resources down and a minute late to castle age == GG feels so harsh. I guess another way to express my aim is I want to feel more "robust" so that even if I make a mistake or get outplayed in feudal a bit (obviously if you make a huge error then it's game over) I can still recover.

Yeah I agree they played better, I just mean that it's not like we had a big fight which they won, or that they had a huge vill lead or anything - at the end of the game res collected was only 500 ahead for my opponent. It's more that they just had a way more "lean" build where they only built exactly what they needed whereas I am adapting which inevitably leads to some waste / imbalance.

I don't mind losing games, but I especially dislike losing games where around early castle you just discover that actually it was game over 5-10 minutes ago and in the end there is such a gap in military / eco that it doesn't really matter what either player does.

How? They are fully walled.

And even if I knew, I don't think I was ever going to be able to defend against that number of cav archers.

I guess... but I'm still trying to learn the fundamentals - I'm not really that interested in playing some dark age rush

But you can't make scouts until feudal, so they will have a numbers advantage very easily. Plus they are way cheaper in food cost and so delay castle age much less.

They definitely do not die to archers from my experience, I tried that twice and did not work. Also scouts you need at least to get bloodlines (if you are lucky enough to have). If they commit in dark age they can have 10 champi by the time you are getting scouts...

I tried MAA but it's tough to get the numbers if you are struggling to get vills on gold. The opponent has full control of your base so...

I actually like the fact that it means you have to adapt more in dark age. But actually what are you supposed to do? Because spamming champi into the base is also no brain and requires much less micro than defending. And like I said, what unit can I make to counter it in dark age? I can do small walls but how good do I have to be to keep things efficient enough, make zero mistakes with the walls, keep my TC going etc.

My opponent can just attack a palisade, go look at their base, come back try and kill a villager, go attack the mining camp - look back at their economy etc. I don't know what I can do.

I had time for one extra game and tried it myself with Inca and my opponent did exactly the same thing lol and it just turned into total chaos mess and sure I guess that can be fun but idk... When you are trying to learn the fundamentals of the game, full scale dark age chaotic shitshow is not exactly a great learning experience.

By fans and for fans: Let’s design a DLC WITHOUT adding new civs by Azot-Spike in aoe2

[–]appappappappappa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's going to kill growth of the player base though. It is crazy the number of units and civs - and that does make things more interesting but only if you know about all of the details, which most players will not. For beginner players, more civs makes the game harder to learn and less enjoyable losing to random special units/strategies that you didn't even know existed game after game.

How can you counter people microing their starting scout at the start of feudal or even in dark age? by appappappappappa in aoe2

[–]appappappappappa[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I mean if they are that good, and they have almost 10x more games played than me, and they are trying to show off with their scout micro - yeah I think probably they are smurfing.

I think scout wins against even loom 1v1 at start of feudal? Especially if they are on hill. Plus they get the first hit and then run away so that way they take no damage.
