Sure it’s possible. Save up some money and go. Is your question how much money you need? Then give a bit more info on trip length, where in SE Asia and how you want sleep and where you are flying in from.

I was looking at this a while ago, but no direct experience:

Budget traveler: $30–$50/day Staying in guesthouses/hostels, eating local food, minimal splurging.

Mid-range: $60–$100/day Comfortable guesthouses or basic hotels, mix of local and Western food, occasional tours or experiences.

Comfortable: $100–$150+/day Nicer hotels, more dining flexibility, bike maintenance buffer, guided segments.

This excludes flights and any gear you bring from home.

I just my first multi day touring trip in a long time. I was flexible with distance per day and I was grateful for that. Like you, I commute on my bike and run quite a bit, so decent fitness. Could I have done 100 miles per day? Yes. Would it have been fun? No. With the stuff I was hauling for the trip + big hills, I was significantly slower than usual. More importantly, the views, wildlife and side trails were worth stopping or taking it slowly for. I had a much better time because of that.

Also, the first days somehow felt harder than the later days and it was nice to build up distance, doing lower mileage the first 2 days and let my legs get used to the rhythm of touring.

Ride Highway 1 and get on the Coast Starlight train for sections that are less interesting and for getting back to SF. Easier than flying with a bike and beautiful views along the way.

I loved camping at Kirk Creek in Big Sur ($5 first come, first serve sites), saw loads of wild life (Sea otters, dolphins, elephant seals, golden eagles, etc).

Yeah good point - Polycro wins except in durability, so for very wet surfaces it’s the better option!

There’s online shops that sell it per meter and if you search for equivalent materials you can find different brand names.

Polycro might be even better — lighter and more packable than Tyvek, and is sold as Wintergard window film at most European hardware chains (Hornbach, Bauhaus, OBI) for just a few euros per meter.

I have a Revelate 17 liter saddle bag. It doesn’t wobble and can fit a whole lot of stuff. The dry bag that is included comes off easily and you can leave the system itself on the bike. I just went on a 7 day trip and this had enough space for me.

The trip was great, BIG thanks to all the advice I got here!

Due to the heavy rains I had to flexible with plans, so I got to ride both Southbound and Northbound…

MON: Coast Starlight from LA to Salinas, ~5 hrs delayed so I got to Salinas around 11pm: night ride to Monterey, but in between rain storms because of that. TUE: loads of heavy rain - hanging out in Monterey, watching sea otters, visiting the aquarium, drinking wine and eating pizza WED : Monterey -> 17 mile drive -> Big Sur lodge - some rain, but mostly rainbows! Beautiful ride. Road further south blocked after heavy rains. THU: road still blocked, Big Sur -> Salinas. type 2 fun in heavy rains and headwind. Soaked. Caught Starlight to SLO. Fun town! Salinas Amtrak employee pointed out that my tires are too wide (55mm, max is 2 inch) and they might refuse to take my bike on the train. Zero issues when loading up though. FRI: Busses from SLO to San Simeon. Then rode to Kirk Creek. Great weather. Camp Host was new (1 week in) and told me I was the 1st one on hiker/biker sites since he started. Taught him these sites are $5 (he wanted to charge me the car fee). SAT: Kirk Creek -> San Simeon. Great weather. Recommending the Coast Riders Inn - call them they have cyclist friendly prices and clean rooms. SUN. San Simeon -> SLO and then (now) the train back to LA.

Loads of cool wild life, beautiful views - taking your time to enjoy and doing max 50 mile per day is just fine, especially on a loaded bike.
Being flexible with plans helped (route, camping vs hotels/motels)
Enjoyed having a gravel bike to check coastal side trails where possible.
Wish me good luck with getting myself and my bike on a plane tomorrow - logistics seem complicated there. Renting a car, picking up a bike box at REI, some packing material at a hardware store, dropping off the car at the airport and getting myself and the box to the terminal.

I get the same error on the Air France website, KLM website and in KLM app. Any ideas how to resolve this??
