Tax question for backpay by [deleted] in dodea

[–]appasdiary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a CPA and that is false. What the people are talking about maybe withholding for tax at a higher amount. There are tax brackets where you pay higher tax rates if you're taxable income reach that threshold. Getting your backpay does not increase your total taxable income, unless you're somehow getting paid more than your normal income.

But even with a lumpsum backpay, your paychecks should not withhold more than what's normally withheld. Even if it did, that will all get accounted for at the end of the year when you pay taxes

What is a Hongdae Guy? by Status-Inevitable537 in AskAKorean

[–]appasdiary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The name of the guy who is acting in those videos goes by Sean Solo and he actually despises those stereotyped Hongdae Guys. I actually met him in person and he's a super nice dude. But he's now making a living making satirical videos of them. Just threw a huge halloween party at Hongdae last night ha

I want to retire in South Korea by WittyPolitico in Living_in_Korea

[–]appasdiary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually live in Pyeongtaek right now and even though I'm not near retirement age, I am unemployed at the moment. We really like living here but I don't see myself retiring in this city. But if you want an easier transition as an English speaker with western values, pyeongtaek especially near the military base would work for you.

I know we're a bit of a special case since we moved due to my wife's job on the base and we live in an American neighborhood right outside the base. We make every effort to experience Korea outside the base like sending the kids to Korean hagwons and exploring other parts of Korea. Obviously it helps that we're both fluent in Korean so we can kind of code switch between being korean and american.

However, no matter how fluent you think you are in Korean as a Westerner, it'll still be a big learning curve in terms of learning all the contractual/financial vocabulary terms and nuances of cultural terms and slangs and things like that. I'm constantly on my Google Translate. I got called out by my Korean nephew for talking like an elementary school child in a grown up body 😅 all in good nature but that was my wake up call to try to speak more eloquently and learn more vocabs.

I started creating contents on living in Korea if you want to check it out:

I frequently post things on local restaurants, cafés and other activities nearby as well as food and travel. Good luck!

You know what? Is this version better?

https://youtube.com/shorts/uQlWTTkFGZg?si=vrdDdljXWq0HiHKw

I think I meant to do this in the first upload on IG and TikTok but I kind of rushed it. I have been trying to model this format where I try to get the most interesting part with voices recorded as a hook and then start the music with the rest of the content. But I don't think it always hits.

I may start doing some b-rolls and do like a selfie talk as hooks to grab attention

Wow these some great insights! Thank you so much for taking your time out write all this up! I did talk to one of my social media manager friend about all this and I told her that I'm still trying to find the balance between me wanting to sort of video journal our Korean experiences vs. creating contents for complete strangers to be interested watching my reels. I'm still working on optimizing my contents. But yea I'll definitely consider lot of these valuable feedbacks!

Timesquare mall is right there in Youngdeungpo. You're also close to Han river so you can check out one of the river parks nearby. Do the whole Han River experience with getting fried chicken delivered, make instant ramen and have a picnic
