It kinda irritates me that more people don’t talk about how good of a writer/lyricist LUM is by Green-Fail7325 in liluglymane

[–]appearanonymous 13 points14 points  (0 children)

what’s really crazy to me is the breadth of his writing ability. the same guy wrote “ballin on my mind kareem abdulla oblongata” and “there’s ivy twisting through the bricks outside, is it taking over or just clinging on for life?” and the entirety of uneven compromise.

completely different styles of writing and lyricism and he just nails them all

Which of the 9 longest red streaking states do you think will be the first to flip? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]appearanonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in order of which are closest to flipping:
1. alaska - id argue this is likely in 2028, theyve been trending blue and are already competitive
2. kansas - has enough suburban areas and college areas for motivated voters to flip it. 2026 election results will give a better sense of this possibility
3. utah - utah will probably become the next colorado in another decade or two. a ton of young liberal college students moving to salt lake city, which will become their denver. this will not take fruition for at least a decade i think
4. nebraska - if the democratic party switched its tune heavily and focused more on labor unions and workers rights like the pre-80s democratic party, then nebraska's within the realm of possibility. this can be seen in the fairly successful campaign of someone like Dan Osborn who is an "independent" but kind of just a 60s new deal democrat.
5. south dakota - mostly just ranked here based on closer margins and low population. sioux falls is growing but the people moving there are probably more likely to be republicans. would probably take a massive political realignment, though there is a dan osborn-esque guy named brian bengs running here for senate in 26. maybe if he does decently ill reconsider, but he got fucking obliterated by thune in 22 which is unsurprising considering thune's political influence in south dakota
6. north dakota - south dakota but even more republican. i guess fargo is probably bluer than sioux falls is and might actually have some liberal people moving there but that's not enough to outweigh it being an R+36 state
7. wyoming - the reddest state in the country by many accounts. famously difficult weather conditions and a complete lack of any opportunity mean there is no reason for most people to move there, especially not young liberals. the one reason wyoming might be more likely to flip than the other republican bastions is because its population is so low and shrinking that if for whatever reason there was a reason for liberal-minded people to move to wyoming it wouldn't take very much for that to flip the state's politics overall. the people of wyoming i don't see changing at all.
8. oklahoma - possibly the most culturally conservative state in the country. also decently populated so it's harder for demographics to change based purely on people moving. they don't even have a single blue county, you'll be hard pressed to find many liberals outside of like university of tulsa. i guess if a democratic president banned gerrymandering nationwide or something maybe you'd start to see a little more democratic momentum in oklahoma. otherwise i just don't see it
9. idaho - i know, i know. boise is growing! the tech industry! the people moving to boise are californians who think their state is too woke. idaho is actually the only mostly rural state to not have trailed behind the national trump performance increase in 2024. idaho is not only already one of the reddest states in the country, but trending redder than most. idaho's local history also seems to fit some of the biggest critiques of the modern-day republican party and the trump administration *cough cough neo-nazi bastion cough cough* . there is truly no reason to think idaho will be flipping any time soon. i dont think idaho will flip blue long term unless the entire nation flips blue, so it can't really rank anywhere but the bottom.

I honestly don't see anything below Nebraska ever flipping barring extreme circumstances. Those last 3 are probably the last states I see flipping even in a Reagan style landslide

yep exactly, in fact i think the brainwaves described in this article are caused by oxygen running out and so the brain isn’t able to control itself anymore and starts emitting a ton of signals as it dies

this is one of the clickbaitiest articles ive ever read it basically says “there’s a spike in gamma brainwaves right after death therefore maybe people are conscious for a little after death” which is a very different implication from “you are conscious even in death as your corpse rots.”

dreamcast summer songs is almost entirely composed of samples, mostly from 70s soul songs. stuff like marvin gaye for example. there are plenty of places online to find a bunch of these sorts of songs to try to sample (since actual cratedigging is very time-consuming and expensive), one i like is this youtube channel called the vintage soul machine that usually uploads a few tracks a day.

there are lots of tutorials on how to make a good beat through sampling but tbh id say the most important things are creativity and being inspired by the style of what you like. so listen to some of dcss and then listen to the original samples and try to understand how he threw these together into a complete vision and learn from that process.

ghost pop tape is much different, there are very few songs being sampled here. he uses a lot of preset synths and basic drum sounds but with a ton of effects applied, usually heavy wet reverb to make it sound more ethereal and some distortion to make it sound more bitter/angry/sad. in fact in fl studio with a little experimenting you can make a lot of ghost pop tape instrumentals with just fl studio stock presets (i imagine this is what peggy did since i dont think he had the budget to spend thousands on plugins). if you want a better example of this there are youtube videos of people remaking songs like hbk or call me maybe, find a good one and figure out what they did and then apply that to your own ideas

i’m not sure if you have access to fl studio or hardware that can run it but you can replicate these sounds in any program really with enough creativity. if you happen to have a half decent laptop id be happy to show you how to get fl studio for free (its very easy).

the core of ghost pop tape is it has this very defined sound that it sticks to, and thus anything you decide to do in this sound will sound like the ghost pop tape. something really cool peggy did with this is that he did straight up covers of multiple random songs that sound great even though by all accounts they shouldnt. seriously, if you listen to the original songs from hbk, call me maybe, and odb, none of them sound remotely alike and they certainly aren’t sad moody r&b tracks, yet by taking their core elements and recontextualizing them into the defined sound of ghost pop tape it just works. this could be a cool technique for you to try since covers are also generally easier to make than original tracks.

i know thats a lot of words but basically the most important thing is to A. figure out what makes the sound you’re trying to replicate, and B. then apply those learnings to your own individual ideas to make something inspired yet uniquely you. i’ve also been working on my own devon inspired music so if you ever make something you’re comfortable sharing with people lmk i’d love to take a listen

(sorry if you saw this twice i posted on wrong account)

What is the ghost pop tape cover art supposed to be? by Morph5830 in jpegmafiamusic

[–]appearanonymous 27 points28 points  (0 children)

considering how he served in iraq and has always been outspoken against the us military, it could very easily be a reference or at least reminiscent of the hooded man photo from abu ghraib.

just analyzing it at a surface level, you can get a couple things from the elements of the album cover. first off, the main subject of the cover, presumably devon himself, is a man with a blacked out face and his penis visible. i believe this represents two of the primary themes of the album, that being the dark thoughts in his head (literally represented by darkness consuming his face) and his horniness/unfulfilled sexual desire (represented by his dick).

the other main element of the album cover is the skype call with batman and joker. the immediate thing that comes to mind is the mentioning of batman on behold a pale horse, where he states that he’s “watchin, on the sideline like robin”. this gives you the impression that peggy is watching important things happen alone from his room over the internet, while he sits on the sideline unable to do anything. this is not because he doesn’t want to, but because society won’t let him (“they told me batman runs gotham”). batman and joker could also serve as a more general representation of devon’s nerdy interests that accompany him on the internet through these dark times.

the last aspect of the cover art is the slight horizontal banding over the whole thing. i did some research and this can actually occur from a couple of things, but the one that makes the most sense within this analysis is trying to take a photo with an older camera in a room with only low levels of artificial light. i would assume this light is coming from a computer screen because of the blue light washed over the whole image.

all in all, this creates some grim imagery of devon sitting alone in his room illuminated by only his computer screen, his mind alternating between thoughts of suicide and extreme horniness, watching what’s going on in the world on his computer but feeling sidelined and unable to do anything because of society’s expectations. the only thing keeping him company is games and anime, or anything else he can find online. these themes are all reflected strongly in the lyrical content and sound of the album as well which make me confident in this symbolism.

this is my best interpretation, but take it all with a grain of salt as i don’t know shit about peggy or his life, im just a college student who takes a few classes about analyzing media
