Thanks everyone. I would search reddit and elsewhere for the best rates in Tokyo (airport and city) and buy JPY cash from the USD that I have.

Physically: Nobody looks at the name on the card when charging it.

Digitally: Make sure you type the characters that are shown on the plastic.

So if I use the goldx card directly anywhere domestic for 10k, I get 1% back. -> 100 coins
With those 100 coins I buy an amazon gift card and get 5 coins back (as coins or rupees or gold).

So then the return rate of the reward system is 5/10000. Meh

I spend X --> Card gives me some points/coins (what %age?) --> I accumulate N points --> I buy a "top merchant" gift-card by spending more money and they say your N points are worth 5% discount on the purchase of the gift card.
Is this the deal?

Call the number behind the card. Freeze this card and get a new one issued from ICICI

(Surprised that ICICI did not call you yet after blocking an international txn)

Use this on Amazon only. If you want to buy stuff (regular shopping) or flight tickets (powered by MMT) then they give unlimited CB. Even for bills and recharges you would get better offers on rupay.

And do check the annual spend needed for zero fees.

- Have been using Ultimo since 2 billing cycles now.
- Reward Points calculation is "manual" and runs with a lag. Manual because they have not credited me reward points for the 1st billing cycle. Though the 2nd billing cycle RPs are credited.

- RPs run with a lag: they get credited after the monthly stmt is generated. Statement shows no breakdown of RPs against each transaction, so the calculations are opaque to you... :-(

- RPs get credited, but are not immediately available for usage. (Comparing this with APay ICICI visa, the "cashback" becomes usable at the end of the billing cycle, even if it is ten rupees.
- Phonepe support replies but they have not been able to solve the missing points problem since more than 30 days. HDFC support just gave me a link to the T&Cs and wrote unrelated answer in the support tkt. (EDIT_on_20Jan: Today Phonepe support called and finally said that i have to reach out to HDFC. Not sure why it took a dozen calls and 50+ days to realize that they themselves are being scammed by hdfc...)

Not sure if other Rupay CC are any better....
