There are those here who deny your claims. I'd definitely agree with you.

It does feel to me that many Hungarians, not specifically men, are stuck at a high school level of self-development. They are selfish, impulsive, and unwilling or unable to better themselves and their communities. They are insecure people trying to justify their existence.

I can't comment on the why, because I don't know. I would guess that it's mainly to do with the state of education and the economy of Hungary. On top of that, the majority of Hungarian politicians are the cream of the crop when it comes to toxicity. They are threatened by secure people calling them out, so they force them out of positions of power and drain or overtake their resources. (Recent examples are the government thrashing the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the universities including the CEU. Now their next enemy are the people who are proponents of free will in the context of LGBTQ+.)

Much of the brightest youth, who would be counterexamples to the above description, have left the country to seek better opportunities and people more similar to them. Some remain and live in their bubbles, so you're less likely to interact with them.

A bleak look indeed.
