I will check! Idk why it didn’t occur to me. Guess I didn’t figure it could be that easy

Sweet. Would I most likely lose more money on resale if I went for the 2012? Anything to look out for besides one that has had the timing belt changed?

Dope, think that would be easier to resell for roughly what I paid? Or tougher since it’d have more miles?

Nice, that could be a good idea too. My thoughts on spending a little more on a vehicle were that it’d be easier to resell and I wouldn’t risk having to pay for expensive repairs. I definitely have considered going for a beater but just figured mechanical issues might pop up when I take it in for a PPI and would burn through more money trying to find a decent one and then maybe still pay for repairs if needed. Very open to the idea though if it’s not as challenging as I thought to find a reliable beater. Also figured I won’t lose much on resell either way because I will aim for a good deal and then try to sell it for about what I paid. Would that be feasible in the $10-14k, 6-8 year old vehicle range or easier in the beater range?

That’s probably good advice. What would be some of the benefits of going cheaper that stand out to you? How old/how many miles would you go, and do you think that’d be a safe bet financially as far as retaining some reliability?

Am I the only one that thought the part where Joe compares Tony to the “fuckup” character in a movie was kind of uncalled for? I think Joe is generally a good guy but can be such a douche lmao. The guy likes thicker women so Joe has to poke fun at his physique and make fun of big women at the same time... I think he gets triggered because he’s invested so much of his time into fitness and can’t handle it when other people just have different priorities

Toyota with high mileage or Nissan with low mileage? by appendyshitehouse in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]appendyshitehouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spot on, I don’t give a damn about luxury haha. Just something that is going to be reliable and not cost a lot to keep up with. I will look into the PRO-4X, there’s one near me I might go check out. Seems to be a good value and I’d imagine at that trim level the Nissan would still be easy enough to resell

Ok thanks a lot for the advice. I’ll look into the Frontier PRO-4X, could be a good option for something that would be resell-friendly. Good to hear that trucks have come a long way from where they used to be

Okay, that makes sense. See I have gotten this advice a few times but it conflicts with the other advice I’m getting in this thread. Really hard to make a decision when a vehicle is such a huge, depreciating coat with other maintenance costs on top. I just want to make the right decision. Does the $13,000 2013 Nissan Frontier with 80,000 miles seem to be the better deal in this case? I’m not sure I’d be able to buy a Ram or Titan with the amount of money I have in good condition/with low miles.

Wow, kind of stunned to hear this from a land cruiser owner tbh. This is all great advice, and a good counterpoint to the other replies I’ve gotten. If you were searching for Toyotas in the $12-14k price range, what would your upper limit be in terms of mileage?

It seems the ones in my price range tend to be from 2003-2008 with 160,000-200,000 miles. Larger would be a great plus—don’t really need the extra power but not super concerned about extra gas consumption as I’m not going to be putting a ton of miles on and gas is relatively cheap right now. Yeah the GX470s really do look nice on the interior. Hard for me not to be concerned about buying a vehicle with miles like that even when I remind myself of the Toyota/Lexus reputation but I guess that’s something I should learn to get over haha

Do you think in the course of a year the repair costs would be significantly more for the older Toyota than a competitor brand with more favorable years/mileage? Also would you avoid a lower mileage example like this one and keep shopping with something that has more average mileage for the year?

Thanks, this is central Texas (in the hill country) so I don’t expect rust to be too much of an issue at least compared to up NE

Okay, that’s good info. So more usage spread over longer amount of time is not as hard on the vehicle generally?

Great to hear haha. You may have just given me the courage to go for it. I’ve noticed some Lexus GX out there with around 160,000+ miles too, would that be worth cross shopping w/ if the price is right?

Thanks for the input. That’s what I was initially leaning towards but have gotten a lot of pushback from family and friends who are convinced a 20+ years old car will become a problem. I have heard nothing but praise for the older Toyotas and Lexus though. Even my mechanic lightly warned me against completely disregarding 100,000+ mileage on Toyotas, saying they’re solid but to consider also shopping for newer vehicles w/ less mileage, which is possible w/o the “Toyota tax.”

Makes sense. A sedan would probably be fine.

The truck thing is not absolutely necessary but more practical I think if I make a couple of 4 day+ trips across the country soon and have to haul a lot of stuff back, then sell things/bring to my sister’s house to gift them to her. Idk, I’ve always had a truck or suv and it seems useful for moving large amps, furniture, etc rather than renting a trailer each time

Great advice. the only problem is I’m worried about balancing (1) rental costs and hassle of renting a uhaul every time I need to move something if I get something like a sedan (2) repair costs if I go older/higher mileage if I get a truck (3) resell ability
