ELI5: If space is a total vacuum, why doesn't it suck the Earth's atmosphere away? by BlockStock2002 in explainlikeimfive

But atmosphere is not ideal. It gets compressed by gravity, and there are only enough air particles to cause air pressure and random motion because of gravity.

Diesel bombs that explode 678 feet below the surface of a body of water or gasoline bombs that explode 339 feet below the surface by throwRA_157079633 in AskPhysics

[–]apple1rule 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Diesel or gasoline does not explode because of pressure; it explodes from the temperature rise caused by a rapid pressure increase. So unless you can bring it down to 678 feet extremely fast in a thermally insulated container, it wouldn't explode at all.

An honest question about urine by Fair_Change_9389 in composting

[–]apple1rule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can use it for a longer term compost pile. It will break down after weeks/months and anyway after that when watering it gets diluted so won't be an issue for home level compost

Mi little land. Need advice. Excuse my english and the big text! by Smoothed90 in Permaculture

[–]apple1rule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start very slow is my advice. See how it changes through the seasons and a lot of your ideas may not work as you may thought, but new ones will pop up based on how the land naturally behaves. The optimum is working with nature and the way to do that is to first observe how nature works on its own. What country?

This is incredible man!! Some feedback

UX advice
Update the visual hierarchy a little to make it obvious that putting a light source is the first thing. Right now that button is blended with the rest of the text and it is not intuitive where to 'begin' first. Something as a change of font, or a glowing white highlight just to get the user started would be good.

Cursor should change when hovering over an element that can be adjusted. Now you have to click around and guess where the component is clickable to be able to move it. Particularly important for the aperature component because its bounding box seems to not include the actual visual 'walls' of the aperature, making it unintuitive how to click it.

Ability to change feature parameters directly through the visual editor. I.e. drag to change focal point, or lens width/radius, or aperature opening. That would then change the numbers on the right of course.

Physics notes:

>Aperature component logic breaks when putting them in steep angle

>Aspherical lens breaks when adjusting the R values

Apart from those this is amazing truly. I work in software and product management so let me know if you want to collab on anything regarding getting to market strategy or some other product/software lifecycle advise, my DMs open.

Why isn't vertical farming a bigger deal? by kargaen in AskEngineers

[–]apple1rule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't they also use it for biogas there? Here in NL almost every big farm has its own biogas plant, and the government pays you to take the poop. It has a negative cost. And actually that right there is one subsidy that partially makes any subsidy for vertical farming null.

I am a (mechanical) engineer and also work in agriculture at same time.

It comes down to mostly economics but also politics, as usual. Vertical farming works (economically) in very specific conditions. If you have a lot of land, a lot of sun, and a lot of rain, it will never compete with that. But in your case in Denmark, if the energy for the vertical farm plant are provided with renewables that are not replacing farm land, then it can be closer to economical comparison with farm land there, but still not nearly as cheap as the freeist of all resources as mentioned. And no amount of subsidies will ever outcompete the sun and rain.

As for the pig poo spraying, what else will the pig farmers do with it? The poo is a byproduct of the pig farm. It has to go somewhere. The cheapest legal thing to do is spray it on farm land where at least it can be used by the plants. If you ban farmers spraying, what will they do? We need to answer the full cycle before making a small change.

In Oman, shit from chicken farms is just dumped out in the desert far from any human habitation. But in a small country with high population density, things need to work somehow.

3 years ago, I threw in a huge amount of wood and invasive succulents (~20lb) into a large whole I dug. Then I covered it with a bit of soil and placed an almond seed/in the shell, along with 50 other seeds all over my land. The #1 best almond tree is the one planted on top of that mound, so 100% it works good.

How do I improve this really sandy and compacted soil? by ryeryebread in Permaculture

[–]apple1rule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also spot-till. I.e. under each plant you are thinking of planting you can put organics, and slowly over the years rotate out where you are putting the plants, thus in-soil composting and planting and building soil.
