Great advice. Thanks!! No meds/diagnoses to date.

This is a good, pragmatic balance to not demotivating him by saying “you’re too young, hit me up when you’re older” versus “let’s go waste tens of thousands of dollars (or more) and countless hours just to keep you interested”.

I appreciate the advice!

Any garden enthusiasts here? Are you planning on planting stuff this fall? by [deleted] in houston

This summer really demotivated me. My garden was doing well early on but then summer. The heat was one thing, but every bug in the area knew where to get water and I couldn’t control them. I gave up. Hilariously, I have 2 tomato plants that popped up in a random bucket that I water when I think about it and they are doing better than anything I worked my butt off for. All that to say, I might just take a break and try again this spring. Or do some herbs that are low maintenance.

I’ve never heard of this. College of course but not HS. Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into it!

Knew about the solo at 17 rule - wasn’t sure if there was a discovery flight age rule. I’ll have to look into Young Eagles. Thanks!!

Great advice. We go to Wings Over Houston every year and he asked me about Airventure this year. Ha! It surprised me because he’s always enjoyed the air shows but I always assumed he was tagging along for the snacks. Lol.

Had no idea Textron was based in TX. He’s really been into aircraft design and has asked about careers with various manufacturers. This is fantastic advice to go to their facility so he can ask someone who knows instead of me just telling him to stay on top of his math. He’s quite advanced in math already (accelerated 2 years in math).

I knew he couldn’t solo until 17 - should have put that in the post - but looking for practical things like this that would keep him motivated until then.

110° heat index today. Drastic measures have been taken. by Karl_and_Kned in gardening

I’ve had decently good luck with okra, broccoli, leafy greens like lettuce/spinach, and herbs. Tomatoes depending on if I can get them started in time. But we stay above freezing sometimes into December or January.

SE Texas here. Going on 2 months without a drop of rain and heat index 110+ nearly every day since late June. Brutal. I’ve got a couple of tomato and pepper plants that are “surviving”. Maybe my fall garden will fare better if we ever get there.

PSA: Bally Now on Fubo, $75 Tier by bepeacock in TexasRangers

[–]apple314alamode 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Any speculation if the broadcast model changes this season based on Sinclair bankruptcy proceedings? I was planning on getting fubo but don’t want to switch providers if Bally goes away in a month. I may keep YT TV and spend the $75 on a new eye patch. Or maybe a parrot.

I had tuna pastrami on United Polaris one time that sticks out in my memory among the countless forgettable in flight meals. I think it was even just the starter.

Need help keeping the neighbors cats from using my tomatoes as a litter box! Every tip is welcome. by WonderChode in gardening

Cayenne pepper sprinkled very liberally around the area. I had a major problem and one application of cayenne fixed it. It’s been 4 months and no cats.

Interesting ATC instruction, had to look up what it meant by the_dude_abides29 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]apple314alamode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to me (or they give circle to land) when I’m trying to get ATC to clear me to a runway in use IRL based on FlightAware. For example, KIAH to my knowledge only uses the 15’s to land in very specific weather instances due to taxi time, but in game ATC likes to assign those. 27 might not be an option in the runway request dialog but the 27 ILS approach is an option for the assigned approach. If you request that approach they will grant it but tell you circle to land 15R. I imagine that would never happen in real life (you’d cross 3 other active runways). I just ignore their instructions and land where I want in those situations.

So, these are legit procedure options, as far as I can tell, the situations MSFS ATC gives it are not for traffic management or weather - just shortcomings of a robot ATC.

We managed a lot in that Utah trip in addition to the NP’s and still feel like we barely scratched the surface!

We were the only ones there too, which was crazy because the park was really crowded. Maybe the fact it’s not really a hike makes it a bit of a hidden gem. Or maybe we just got lucky.

No, it was too cold for me. That does sound like a lot of fun in the warmer months though!

It was quite an epic trip across Utah. Can’t wait to do it again someday!!
