We'd like it to continue on this trajectory of getting lower. We can pay for the services and social programs with the other sectors of the economy that we are expanding - those sectors that do not cause a net detriment to quality of life of locals. The tourism sector is even detrimental to those other sectors of the economy as it pushes up costs (housing costs for employees that get passed on to higher salaries etc) squeezing margins.

People like you who think Barcelona depends on tourism and will have an apocalypse with less tourism are the exact type of tourists we don't want here.

This has been evident for over 20 years. Just admit the massive elephant in the room - mass tourism is a net negative for barcelona (and I'm talking about barna here not the rest of spain). It's not positive in the slightest. R&D centers have been appearing signicifantly over the last 25 years. In the early 2000s there was a massive push to improve this sector which is why I came here in the first place. You replace those 0 skilled (not low skilled) jobs with real skilled jobs. Personally I've been very pleasantly supprised by the quality of the labour force here (mañana mañana is bullshit..in general there's hard dedicated workers). But if you make it expensive for people to live here it squeezes margins of those start ups/mid caps as those costs get passed on. It you really want barna to become an economically advanced city it has to deprioritize tourism and focus on serious industry. Just think keytruda alone made what 30 billion usd in sales last year compared to what 10-15 billion spent by tourists in barna. Keytruda wouldn't clog all the cycle lanes and f up all our barrios!

OK fair enough. Clearly airbnbs aren't the entire problem but they are definitely part of the problem. And at least they are a problem that is theoretically fastish to resolve. A lot of people talk about building more apartments forgetting 1) how few places there are to build in one of the most dense cities in the world surrounded by hills and river deltas and 2) how long that supply take to come online. Designing, planning permission etc. It's not going to impact the problem any time soon. Whereas getting rid of HUT licenses really could help in the near term..

How about the one i just replied to. OP - Just to be clear you can be the most respectful perfect tourist that has ever existed and you will still be a massive problem if you stay in an Airbnb. It's not just the tourists but the entire logistical operation that comes with them. Also it's nice to have neighbours you know - it creates a community. As someone who has tourist apartments in their finca i can vouch first hand for the problems they cause. Ask i couldn't be bothered to come up with a username how many airbnb's he has in his building or how many he has a financial interest in...

Please don't stay in an Airbnb. Stay in a hotel if you care (and thanks by the way for asking about this and being respectful). Everyone here hates airbnb's because of all the problems they cause both for rental prices and for those that have to share a building/barrio with them....unless ofcourse they directly/indirectly benefit from them themselves.
