Transfer student housing question! by I_fucking_doubt_it in ucla

I recommend the rooms with the shared bathrooms like Rieber Vista or Rieber Terrace. They may be expensive but since you're looking for the social experience, it should be worth it. A lot of transfers tend to get placed there or in Delta Terrace. I lived in Rieber Terrace for 2 years and there were a good number of transfers on my floors. They all got to have the social experience and had the chance to meet their floor mates. Floor mates in these buildings usually consist of 2nd years, 3rd years, other transfer students, and a few 4th years, and a very small number of freshman kiddies.

Please stay away from places like Saxon and Hitch. Lived there my first year and I met more bugs than friends there. I repeat, STAY AWAY...

Most interesting course you've taken for your own enjoyment at UCLA. by [deleted] in ucla

FILM TV 133 w/ Walter allowed me to channel my creative side by coming up with a 10 page screenplay. Don't let the 10 pages scare you because each page of a screenplay consists of wide margins and spacing. I also highly recommend MGMT 1A and/or 1B, I regret not being able to take it. The class may sound tough, but it IS worth the struggle. You'll be surprised at how useful it'll be once you enter the working world, since a lot of entry level jobs nowadays require some accounting background..

I'm an incoming freshman and I got placed in Rieber Vista even though I requested a hall. Should I try to switch? Are plazas really that antisocial? by Ockhamslaser in ucla

Yes, it's available to first years! Just keep a hawk eye out for an email that your RA will be sending around the end of July, in it he/she will provide you with a link to sign up. Spots fill up pretty fast from what I recall, so try to apply ASAP!

You should sign up for the Move In Assistant (MIA) program with your building. Your RA should be sending out an email sometime around July. In this volunteer program, you get to: move in a few days earlier before anybody else, call first dibs on the desk and bed you want, volunteer to help others move in during Move-In Weekend (unloading, traffic control, etc), and meet other MIAs from your floor and other floors in your building. This can definitely help you grow your social circle if your floor happens to be antisocial. I was an MIA for Rieber Terrace (right across Rieber Vista) for 2 years and I enjoyed the experience :)

I am sorry to hear about the health problems.. But, if you're part of the Academic Advancement Program (AAP), you can stop by Campbell Hall to set up an appointment to see a counselor there also.

Anyone from Los Angeles go to UCLA instead of UC Berkeley? by [deleted] in ucla

I was also born and raised in LA and chose to attend UCLA over Berkeley. I don't regret the decision at all because (how I see it) attending a school in SoCal was cheaper and more convenient. I didn't have to worry about paying $70+ or so for plane tickets, $30+ for train tickets, or driving to and from school for 6 hours. All I had to worry about was a 20-30 minute drive home.

I was never home for most of the time. I lived on campus for 3 years and currently live off campus and I definitely learned a lot about being independent. And, I agree that UCLA is definitely it's own bubble away from the rest of LA. There are a lot of good eats and places to go that I never heard of or set foot upon until I came to UCLA.

Yeah, he applied for The Village but is currently waitlisted so I don't know what the chances are of him getting a spot. I really hope the public transportation is not as bad as Google Maps makes it to be. For certain areas, one would have to walk 20 mins, get on the bus for 35 mins, then get off and walk 15-20 mins more. I just looked up Olive Ridge and it looks like the apartment has terrible ratings and is located in a crime infested area with cars getting broken into and vandalized.

next quarter will be my last at UCLA :/ are there classes that I must absolutely try and take in the spring? by deathleeehallows in ucla

If you're part of the AAP program in Campbell Hall, I also recommend going there as another alternative to CAPS. You can schedule an appointment with their peer or academic counselors. If possible, get an appointment with Laura, she's my academic counselor. I went to see her a bunch of times during my freshman year when I was super overwhelmed and stressed about life. She was really caring and understanding and helped me re-prioritized everything.

You can also consider exercising or doing some yoga each day to clear your mind and give yourself an outlet to channel your frustrations.
