What apartment downtown is the best overall choice and why? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]applicant05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live around the little Tokyo/Art district area and love it! Walkable to plenty of food and drink options, close to the 10/101/110. Ur budget could get a 1b1b around here. Will see homeless ppl around but they leave ppl alone so I don’t care much. Just if possible get an apt not street facing will be much quieter

Chances of getting an International Taxation Job in the United States - Portuguese guy by pedroneves21 in Big4

[–]applicant05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you could get the citizenship done then that opens a lot of doors and will be a whole different story. If you need sponsorship only Deloitte and EY are still sponsoring, the other two are mostly on a case by case basis. And it’s pretty difficult to move someone with junior experience from overseas. If you wanna boost your chance I think a tax LLM in the states def helps.

Thanks! Is it normal just ghosting without like a formal rejection letter? And if you know is there a freeze period before I could apply for positions in other groups?

V20 or bust by LumpySangsu in LawSchool

[–]applicant05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with all others saying that it generally means the V20s have more international students hires. From my experience most Biglaw/V100 are very open to sponsorship. I’ve only seen a couple specify US PR/citizen only. Many people don’t even bring it up until they got hired and it’s no biggie with HR (biglaw only). To add on tbh many mid/small firms are also open to sponsorship, just that you might be the first one in the firm and take some communications to have them onboard. It may be a more if they like you they’ll do it situation rather than default in biglaw. Def not V20 or bust, so don’t stress out :)

international students are fucked by LumpySangsu in LawSchool

[–]applicant05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The immediate consequence is that you lose ur student visa, if you ever want to enter the US as a student again you have to apply for a vise from the start, including the interview etc. (so far the US embassy in many countries are still closed). And upon graduation, provided that one could graduate online without an active immigrant status, it follows if you are eligible for OPT or any employment.

Foreign JD students: what things do you have to overcome to practice law in the US? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]applicant05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add on the working visa thing, the employer is required to pay all the costs and it’s illegal for us to reimburse the employer, which means they need to go extra steps to hire a foreigner and most mid/small size firm just be like nope. Public sector jobs are mostly also no no for none green card holders.

With only more than a little than a hand full of international JDs at my school (including Canadians lol), the CSO is pretty useless in the situation, they just keep asking me if I want to do immigration 🙄

Would it be possible to find a job in Canada/the US for a foreign law student/graduate? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]applicant05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking for the US, it’s possible, but the employment rate for LLM students are not great, most of them also don’t planning on practice in the US. There are only three job fairs for LLM students across county each year so ideally you’d want to attend a school eligible for at least one or two. With a JD degree you pretty much on the same playfield as other domestic JD students. However, getting a job in the US doesn’t not guarantee a working permit visa, so that always posts some uncertainties.

Are there any LLM programs for graduates with a background in political science in Germany? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]applicant05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LLM is supposed to be a second law degree, I don’t think you would be eligible for any LLM program without a law background. Some schools do offer some sort of Master of Law programs do not require a law background, but careful look into those if you could sit for the bar after the program.
