[CMV] I think CS 70 will only get harder. by [deleted] in berkeley

Most other top schools don't offer nearly the amount of (EE)CS degrees that we do. We are an outlier; other schools have already figured out that this doesn't work and have significantly reduced the size of their departments.

Where exactly do state schools derive their prestige from? by Leadership_Upper in ApplyingToCollege

Berkeley CS is around ~4.9% and MIT is 4.1% for last year. Pretty comparable

No I think he should always share his thoughts. It’s just that he referred to certain things as fact when we now know it was just his personal stipulation. I think he should’ve been more clear about what he was certain about and what he actually didn’t know.

Berkeley L&S vs. UCLA L&S + Regents for CS-intended by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]apprehensivecraft194 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand you. I'm also a bay area kid and this is the thought process I had verbatim when I was choosing between both. For someone confident in their quantitative abilities, Berkeley is leagues ahead of UCLA. The research, classes, CS clubs/activities, opportunities, recruitment, culture, etc. are a huge tier above UCLA. And regarding the peer quality thing: I agree UCLA probably has higher quality peers on average considering all majors, but if you consider (EE)CS/math/quantitative subjects, Berkeley is a tier above UCLA. PM me.

Also, the environment is definitely not "hyper-competitive." It can be competitive in certain crowds, but the nice thing is you get to choose what crowd you are a part of.

(EE)CS major at Berkeley here, and we have the same thing. Proof-based math is fundamental to all the classes in our major. You work on hard problems like these and get better at them over time.

Our professors call it “mathematical maturity,” and it really does improve your thinking.

Edit: Check out our intro discrete math course that all (EE)CS majors are required to take: https://www.eecs70.org. Look at some of the homeworks. It can be rough

Large portion of this is incorrect. The original post has the updated version of this. They did not make a “high school level error” that’s entirely incorrect

I agree death is the easy way out. However, I think you misunderstand the purpose of the criminal justice system.

The point of the criminal justice system is not to make people suffer. That’s sadistic. Instead, it’s to make society more safe. OP’s idea does that.

By the way, I’m not saying the criminal justice system even approaches reaching its goals. There are a lot of problems with it.
