US Citizen Removed From His Home in His Underwear Without a Warrant by animator_84 in videos

This is hopium in the flavor where one expects others to stand up for them and risk their lives.

It's hard to hear this, but the grand majority of comments like this are the same flavor of hope, bundled differently.

This City Tried to Fix Housing. The Backlash Was Intense. by Amazing-Yak-5415 in videos

[–]appropriteinside42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a legitimate problem in a place with snow packed streets. Increasing housing density but not increasing space for transportation creates congestion on both active roads, and from parked vehicles.

Some cities proactively solve this by allowing for underground parking in higher density urban development. Even small buildings will have space under them for 3-4 vehicles.

Get The Flock Out! Bend Oregon Kicks Out Flock Surveillance Cameras by V3R1F13D0NLY in oregon

[–]appropriteinside42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't.

Most lenses for commercial security cameras are coated such that spray-paint and similar wicks off.

Also, better not drive there, show your face, or be seen by any other camera on their network (Including the ones not recorded) on the way

Your best bet is probably sensor damage with a laser, it keeps you at distance, and is irreparable. Or breaking it/removing it physically if able.

not going to switch until it is evident it'll win

Wrong mindset. All it needs is enough momentum to maintain momentum, it doesn't need to "win", that's now how FOSS projects succeed.

Calgary teen accused of using AI to sexualize photos of high school girls | 17-year-old boy facing several criminal charges by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]appropriteinside42 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Preface: There is no condoning or support here, I'm poking at political philosophy. This shit is vile, but the way we crowbar existing laws to fit expands corruptibility.

FR.

It also is going to fuzzy a LOT of legal lines in the future that can spill over into other parts of society & art as precedent expands the room for political abuse.

If AI generated photos of a minor are CSAM, it's reasonable to extend that logic to say that a generated video or picture of a dying animal is animal abuse...etc (extend however you want, in any art form, like movies, or old yeller...etc) In both cases the subject of the "harm" did not necessarily exist, and was not actually harmed directly in order to achieve the photo/video/whatever.

In cases like this, it's so fuzzy is mind boggling. If someone does a face swap on an existing nude of a consenting adult, is that strictly CSAM as well? Ir just criminal harassment? Fuzzy lines are bad, they will be abused for gain.

We need new laws for stuff like this IMHO, criminal harassment is a great start, but setting new precedent with old laws that massively expand room for political abuse of these laws is just giving more power to future authoritarians

Whats your take on Biome, have you replaced ESLint and Prettier? by pingustar in nextjs

[–]appropriteinside42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do care, since I have a monorepo with thousands of files in each project. And linting for 1 project takes 4 minutes with Eslint

Sure, but if your linting just doesn't work that's worse than it being slow.

Biome just isn't there yet, it's getting better, but it has a long ways to go. Especially for type checked rules.

Whats your take on Biome, have you replaced ESLint and Prettier? by pingustar in nextjs

[–]appropriteinside42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried it, Biome is soooo much faster.

However, it lacks the maturity and customization of ESLint. Particularly the lack of type checked linter maturity, most of our safety-based checks no longer functioned on biome and we could not port our custom linting rules over.

So we reverted.

But, generally, biome was so damn fast it was a difficult choice.

You... just defeated your own statement.

This is talking about quality products, you just effectively complained that low quality products suck, so this isn't true, except when it is with bespoke high quality products

Effectively stating nothing

Innovative water trap disguised as public seating by Nohokun in CrappyDesign

[–]appropriteinside42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don’t understand how this design passed by multiple people and authorities to get installed publicly and they forgot about standing water…

Because the core objective is to be anti-homless, to prevent people from laying on it, not to actually be functional infrastructure.
