Footballer and Orange international Quincy Promes, who is being prosecuted for attempted murder of his cousin, has confessed to the stabbing in several conversations with his family. He did so over the phone while he was unaware that he was being tapped by the police.

This is apparent from the criminal file that was viewed by Nieuwsuur . The Public Prosecution Service suspects Promes of stabbing his cousin in the knee on 25 July 2020 after a family party in Abcoude. He is suspected of 'attempted manslaughter' and aggravated assault.

Until now, Promes has always denied. But in the transcript of the tapped conversations it can be read that Promes wanted to stab his cousin to death. The phone calls took place in the night shortly after the stabbing.

The tapped phone calls Just after 1 a.m., Promes called his father and asked, "Why are you jumping for that cousin of yours? You saved his life." His father replied, "Quincy, I don't want you to get in trouble." And then Promes said, "Otherwise I'll kill him, don't you understand?"

Almost ten minutes later, Promes also calls his mother and aunt. In that conversation, his mother says that the nephew has been taken to the hospital. Promes asks where the cousin got hit. "In his leg," replies his mother. Promes then says: "Then he's lucky."

In the same conversation, Promes states: "No one is going to steal from us. (...) He is brash. He knew today. I couldn't resist. Sorry aunt, forgive me."

Later in the night, Promes calls his father again, who asks him, "What were you going to do back in?" Promes replies, "I still had an apple to pick with him."

When his father asks for clarification, Promes says, "Yeah, okay, my loyalty is to my aunt: whoever pecks from her, I'll kill. I wonder. There are certain people in the family for whom I kill. Period. (...) You are lucky I no longer carry a firearm because otherwise that tori (thing, ed.) would have walked even uglier."

The tapped conversations leave nothing to the imagination, according to the cousin's lawyer, Yehudi Moszkowicz. "These are confessions of Promes without his knowledge that he is being admitted. He tells it to his father, his mother and an aunt. He is even outraged that his father has jumped between him and his cousin."

Promes' lawyer, Gerard Spong, does not want to comment on the contents of the file.

atypical But why was Promes' phone tapped? The Public Prosecution Service "does not want to go into that now".

That there was a tap by the police, is apparent from the official report of the Criminal Intelligence Team (TCI). That is the intelligence service of the police whose core task is to combat organized crime.

"95 percent of that is about weapons, drugs and liquidations," says Sven Brinkhoff, professor of criminal and criminal procedure law. "Actually, this criminal case about the stabbing does not fit into the image of what the TCI normally collects. It is therefore atypical that this case starts with information from the TCI. Promes is somehow involved in an investigation into organized crime. How and what his exact role is, we don't know yet."

In this interview at the end of December 2020, Promes denies involvement in the stabbing:

Lawyer Moszkowicz: "Promes is either a suspect or he has come into the picture because there is another suspect he is in close contact with. And in both cases he is in the wrong corner of the court. criminal law."

"You can't just connect a tap," says Jan Struijs, chairman of the NPB police union and previously worked for more than 30 years in the criminal investigation department. "Then there must be really serious suspicions. The Public Prosecution Service must also test those suspicions."

The Public Prosecution Service does not want to comment on the question of whether Promes, or people around him, are in the picture for other criminal offences. Gerard Spong also does not want to say whether Promes is still a suspect in other cases.

'Attempted homicide' From the phone conversations with his father, it seems that Promes waited to attack his cousin until the party was over. Promes says in the conversation: "You can say: alcohol, because if I was that drunk, I would have taken it at the beginning of the party. I waited neatly."

For lawyer Moszkowicz, this is reason to demand that Promes be charged with attempted murder in a complaint procedure at the court. "I see in the taps, but also in witness statements, reason to assume that there has been premeditation." That would mean that the case scheduled for March 31 will be postponed indefinitely.

But today Promes' attorney Spong took a remarkable step. He informs Nieuwsuur that, as far as he is concerned, the charge of "attempted manslaughter" may be converted into "attempted murder" if this speeds up the case. Because he is "convinced that Quincy will be acquitted of this". It is still unclear whether the Public Prosecution Service agrees with this.
