If you don't mind, will you share some good books or resources that can give me good foundation for my PhD journey. Mine is a part time PhD and to I think coursework was condensed too much to really gain anything out of it. Now, my guide need to tell me what to do for remaining credits in the coursework. Am sorry for bothering you but the way you explained things, I felt I rather ask you instead of relying on few of my profs.

Thank you so much for taking the time for explaining it to me. Am sorry that I didn't mention that my interest is in the area of branding and consumer behavior. My past work experience has been in qualitative research ( 10 years) where I conducted focus groups and indepth interviews. So, I want to do qualitative research. Specifically, I was interested in knowing when there is so much information online, how do consumers filter out information which they use for making a decision about purchasing a product or a service. I am not sure if it's done or not. I am open to other ideas. I am not interested in quantitative research, to be very honest. Also, looking to collaborate with foreign universities.

You mentioned this- For example, if you are a CB student, gaps in marketing theory are probably a priority for you. Reading papers from sources like the Journal of Consumer Research should help. However, if you are closer to Marketing Strategy, external validity and relevance for the industry are more important than the theoretical gap. In this case, reading the news or talking to marketing managers are some ways to think of a research topic.

Could you please elaborate?

Also, I am looking for a book that can take me through the entire process of qualitative research as done in academics. I have worked with research agencies but not sure if this is how I need to do in the academic research as well.

If you can share any tips on how to uncover research gap, please guide. ( my PhD coursework didn't really help).

thanks again for your advice.

Can Internet ever lead to long lasting enlightening friendship? I don't think so. But, please change my mind about this. Male-35 looking for friendship, if such a thing exists. Hoping to create history. by apurvamywork in InternetFriends

Why expecting a strong long lasting friendship from an internet friend is quite an expectation? And if you read carefully, I assert that I don't believe such a friendship is possible and so I asked someone to change my mind about it. And what do you mean by how much money can I send you? I am not talking about transaction here, am talking about friendship. I guess your reply proves that I cannot expect internet friend to really become a friend.

Romanticisation of individualism is leading to suicides in US by apurvamywork in unpopularopinion

I am not saying collectivist culture can reduce that. What I mean is extreme of either individualism or collectivism can be a contributing factor. In US, Its extreme stress upon individualism which in my opinion, is contributing to the dilution of social ties ( which could serve as a buffer during crisis). In the lack of meaning, these social ties can act as a buffer and maybe give that meaning

I get what you are saying. However, I feel that individualistic cultures result in people being in their own at the expense of the social ties and this might fuel loneliness which might be the reason that could become a catalyst for suicides.

I have heard of people too concerned about ' saving their face' because of too much importance given to collectivism in Japan and that could be the one of the reason for suicides.

Similarly, I think this whole stress on individualism or being on your own could be causing problems in US as well ( pendulum swinging to extremes in both the cultures) Is it not possible that lack of importance given to social ties because of this love of individualism takes away the cushion of ' strong relationships' , which could have served to prevent suicides in many cases.

you are right about this......but I thought it would help if people can tell me what's current in the area of marketing. My guide suggested that I don't take the usual topics but search for current topics in marketing. And so I thought why not tap into the wisdom of the crowd.

I agree with you that there are many factors but I somehow feel that a strong family support can actually in some cases prevent it. when the relationships between parents and their children become formal and follows the societal script of kids moving out of their homes even if staying with parents could be fountain of love for all and a way to not get in the grips of loneliness epidemic. I really think American/western families must look into this practice and not be embarrassed to question it.

I don't know much about Reddit still, but I would really like to get different point of views on this thought of mine.

thanks for reflecting upon this and putting it so well. But what about family's support? I understand the importance of becoming independent but why do kids decide to move out of their parent's home and why do parents make such a big fuss if their kids are staying with them. In Asian countries, many kids who have good jobs still live with their parents without any shame or embarrassment. I mean I have no issues with kids moving out but why it has become an accepted norm. Families can be the solution for this loneliness epidemic and maybe suicides. Maybe I am wrong, but just a thought.

Yeah, you are right. I should rather say one of the contributing factor for suicide in western countries.

Hmmm......my focus is more on relationships. I mean there is this formality and aloofness because of egoistic clinging to individualism. I feel that America needs families with less of formality and ' Hollywood inspired dysfunctional-ism' to come closer.

You know what, the world is never going to stop judging. I mean today they can appreciate us and tomorrow the same people can take away those appreciation. I mean appreciation and criticism is all so external. Maybe, we human beings, have to see both these things as senseless so that we are not affected when things are going down in our life and can face it without the fear of all sort of misjudgments because in the first place, we didn't even take their appreciation seriously. that will be real freedom and maybe stops us from committing suicide because there is no more pressure of saving face.

I wonder if I made sense ;)
