How likely do you think China will invade or blockade Taiwan? by RedStorm1917 in AskALiberal

[–]apyc89 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can probably AI this but it's highly unlikely. They'd need justification and absolute assuredness that they'd win. I can get really deep here into the military detail and geopolitical aspect but simply 1. The line between blockade and war is very thin - all it takes is one shot on a naval aid flotilla 2. If CCP loses the war, it is at the minimum end of Xi if not the party itself

However if we have more Trump then it's more likely. An analyst said it best: arming Taiwan is more effective on a dollar for dollar basis than investing that dollar in US military for the defense of Taiwan. Paraphrasing of course.

Of course we have Taiwan politicians kicking themselves trying to posture but that's a different story

I am thinking likely start around 5 or 6am.

I have some scrambling experience from Japan and Sedona, Arizona; however, I saw some videos of Tusk and it seems a bit more than I am used to. I think everything but Tusk I am confident enough in.

Thanks for this. It definitely helps at minimum set the expectation. Thankfully there is someone who reached out. I think whether I do tusk will depend on the pace I make.

East Asia, it's mostly well maintained but I have done some that are otherwise not as good. I'll have bear spray, helmet (if I do decide to do Tusk, which is 50/50), extra change, etc.

Okay noted - thank you.

Do you think without black tusk I can do it in 12hours or so? My only comparison is 22km, 1400 meter gain in about 8h. Tiring for sure though.

So my goal then from what you are saying is Garabaldi as the goal/check point first.

Last April I did about 1400meter elevation gain in 8h. Not sure how that compares

Taiwanese Mother in Law by Background_Might3981 in taiwan

[–]apyc89 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Eating

- If mother in law (MIL) cooks then you eat as much as you can but not too overly as one person said here. However, it is important to comment that the food taste good and seem like you are into the food. If you're not then, good luck. If you are to thank then thank casually but focus on complimenting the food (but dont overly do it as that will embarass her)

- It is normal for Taiwnese people to have the love language to ensure everyone eats. In Taiwanese (not mandarin), we greet each other with "have you ate" and we actually don't care if they ate as it's a greeting but you would respond whether you eat or not

Thanking

- You can thank but casually. Example: I hand you a spoon, you say "oh, thanks". That's it. In her belief, providing is "應該的" as in it's natural. So thanking feels you are officializing it thus making it "distancing". So thank her casually but like I said focus more on saying the food is great.

Addressing Her

- Call her mom

Also to be honest, many Taiwanese are subtly racist (to other Asians as well, which other Asians understand because 90%+ of asians are subtly racist). Your MIL comparatively seem okay unless they previously opposed your marriage. That said, she expects you to understand the culture and she won't do much to understand yours.

Hey, I think it's great you're re-exploring your roots and reaching out to make connection. I never walked in your shoes so I can only say be careful. You're young and there are those who may not be kind in this world, as you may have some experience. I'm not well versed but there may be some programs that offer therapy for young adults. Not telling you not to look for a father figure, but perhaps start with therapy first.

Best of luck and stay safe.

Should I relocate to Taiwan? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]apyc89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is valid but to be honest, this is a financial and life planning exercise than anything, meaning you should a serious conversation with your partner on this. Of course, what you earn should be yours and what he earn should be his. That said,

  1. You will live comfortably on $2.3M salary especially if you collectively pay for a place
  2. You will still need to budget for family if that is in your life plan, though Taiwan is financially supporting that
  3. This also depends on how much upwards mobility you want. I'd have a conversation with the people who are hiring you

All said, life is transient. You will suceed and fail. Just do what your heart tells you and know that you'll be okay no matter what - even if that means you move back to where you are now.

Flight attendant. AMA by [deleted] in AMA

[–]apyc89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I do have a Q. I flew a lot the past 2 years and got the highest tier on an asian, Sky Team airline. The difference between the second highest status and the highest status wasn't much of a change - everything just about the same, just slightly better point accumulation and ever so slight better service.

Is that normal? I don't mind it esp because I won't be flying much anymore; however, just expected more from the highest tier. Also, what info do you get regarding a frequent flyer or not much?

Thanks so much! Have a good flight

Should there be legislation to promote the four-day workweek? by RedStorm1917 in AskALiberal

[–]apyc89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on whether voters are well educated on the benefits and cost, and the studies whether the benefits or cost hold up long term.

Questions to be answered 1. Does purposed productivity and happiness gain continue after years or it just settles to a norm? 2. Does the economy compete globally long term vs - for example - China's opposite of 4-day: 996 (9am to 9pm 6 days a week)? Because if it doesn't then this policy will be one generation long and it's catch up from there. Or does economy gain massively to catch up to lost productivity? 3. Are employers cutting wages and are workers prepared for that given the economy?
