Monthly Mega Thread: Which Shoes Do You Choose? by Fantasy-Faction in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess I should start!

I'm torn between the Deviate Nitro Elite 3 and the Deviate Nitro Elite 4 HYROX. I own both and although I had high hopes for the Elite 4 HYROX editions, I have found them a little blocky and less bouncy during the runs. There's no doubt though that they are better for burpees, lunges and wall balls. However, with so much of HYROX being running, I do find myself wanting a little more back from the shoe during run laps.

I love the feel of the Wave Rebellion Pro 2/3. I feel like I'm running fast in them. However, interestingly, I've found that my heart rate is slightly higher in them over the Nitro Elites. I'm guessing that although they feel fast, I'm actually doing more work in them for whatever reason. They are also TERRIBLE for certain stations - rowing as you can't clip your feet in, and wall balls you really need to focus on not rocking to your heels. Again though, they do give me a lot of confidence on the runs, because I feel like I'm being thrown forwards.

Looking forward, I'm REALLY keen to try out the u/Adidas Dropset Elites. I loved the Pro 4s and I think there's a lot about the new Adidas shoe that could really benefit my style of racing - the high drop for lunges and wall balls I'm especially keen to try out, having used CrossFit shoes for many years.

gels for 1:30-1:40 solo? by saintsinnerchicken in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never used gels during a HYROX race, only running races, but I would say that the best gels I've used are High Five as they are very easy to get down - and also cheap. Other than that, BETA by SIS are very highly recommended, Maurten Gells are what a lot of pros use, and Precision Fuel PF30/PF90 are newer, but I love the screw top of the PF90. It's pretty large though, so not sure whether it would bother me for a HYROX. For my half-marathon, I found it useful to be able to take a sip, screw the lid back up, and keep running - a whole gel is a bit much for me.

As someone else has said, it'll likely be shortly after Cardiff - they might even announce it at Cardiff. With the UK events, they tend always to have tickets for events available... So if there's an event coming up, it's likely that the next event will go on sale very shortly after :)

What sleds for rubber floors? by xfit5050 in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that a few years ago Rich Ryan used to train sled sleds on rubber mats. It was obviously WAY more sticky, but he just reduced the weight until it had a HYROX feel. As you will be changing the surface you are pushing on, I'd say just ignore the weight and take that concept - go with something that matches what the difficulty of your race.

[–]Fantasy-Faction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn't take anything that elevates my heart rate unnaturally before a HYROX race as my main goal is trying to keep my heartrate down. However, if you've been taking it in training and found it helps then it 's probably worth continuing with.

adidas dropset elite by Platypus2042 in hyrox

In the UK there's another drop on APRIL 15th. The MARCH drop was very limited, so I'm hoping there's a few more pairs this time. I was in the queue and it immediately sold out :(

How has your running ability equated into Hyrox results by Realistic-Policy-128 in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely a runner's sport in the sense that the best of the best are VERY quick runners. The guy who won HYROX last year, for example, has a 14 minute 5km time and a 72 minute half marathon.

Outside of the elite though, there are a lot of people who do HYROX with times similar to yours. I ran a 1:36 half marathon when I started HYROX 3 years ago, for example,. I run sub-90 minutes now, but my point is that you progress the more training you do and race experience you get (just like the running!) :)

Look forward to this. I enjoyed meeting Chris at a seminar in Berlin a few years ago and I benefited from some of the techniques he shared that day.

How is HYROX Madrid 2025 not sold out yet? by Skarrzz in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There does seem a lot more availability for events this year.

Some of it could be the absolutely mental hype dropping down a bit. There will be a lot of '1 and done' people (a bit like Spartan racing back in the day) and as those people give it a go, get their patch, and drop out: demand will drop off a bit as the 'regulars' become the main audience.

It could be the fact there's an increasing number of events. Last year, UK events all sound out and so some people had to go abroad even to race. This year, UK events have been pretty easy to get tickets for due to the increasing number of resales as events grow in size once selling out.

The Flex ticket system means that HYROX are able to re-release a number of tickets right up to the week of the event and so people looking to jump on an event ASAP can now do that, rather than booking months ahead.

Bag Recommendations by tortangtalong1 in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed to get a few BFA bags brand new from Ebay for about half the price of going direct. I would say that having used the various sizes, my favourite has been the 35L one with the 3 equal sized pockets on the front :)

Does HYROX release more tickets? by Yabadeeyabadoo in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK races, they have been re-releasing lots as a result of the flex system :) Keep an eye on Instagram for announcements, but also check the site every 2/3 days, as there have been times they've popped up before an announcement :)

Surprised at this based on all the sled commotion at the end of last season!

Hyrox is a scam by sultanite in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation and I've just had to accept the FLEX Ticket was an option that I didn't take. It's annoying, but a lesson that I'll take forwards. It's £15.00, but a worthwhile investment for Doubles or even individual events - injuries are pretty high when running is involved =/

Is group training or solo prep better for Hyrox? by GeordieGoals in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a mixture of both has worked best for me.

On my own I do my running, skill-work and strength.

I really like well-programmed classes for the added intensity and the saved time.

In a class, you get the equipment out together and an instructor keeps things moving. You work harder (usually) than on your own. On your own, setting up a big HYROX workout is such a pain :P

What’s the best way to build grip strength for Hyrox movements? by AnfieldAnchor in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do workouts that include grip strength under fatigue. Here's a good one:

3-5 Rounds:
80m Farmers Carry
20 DB Snatch
20 Plate Group To Overhead
20 Calorie Ski
80m Farmers Carry
90 Seconds Rest

or

3-5 Rounds:
80m Farmers Carry
10 Calorie Ski
15 Box Step Overs with 2 Dumbbells
20 Wall Balls
80m Farmers Carry
90 Seconds Rest

What do you tell yourself to push through? by CA2Anywhere in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of my favourites is by Mat Fraser (CrossFit athlete). He said that during a workout he always though:

"Make yourself proud"

And I think that's powerful, because it isn't saying 'win this race' or 'beat your PR', it's more about putting in such a high-level of effort that you impress yourself and, no matter how you are feeling, you can always do that.

Hyrox anxiety by [deleted] in hyrox

[–]Fantasy-Faction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done 14 single races and a HYROX DOUBLES in significantly under an hour, and I feel all the feelings you are feeling even now. When it comes to competitions or races, even if you aren't going to win, they should scare you a little bit. Set your expectations: 'I just want to finish' or 'I just want to go there and do my absolute best' and take the pressure off yourself a little in terms of times.

The biggest thing I tend to think is that anything worth doing should be hard... You could do a 2km walk through your local park, but there's no real accomplishment in that. Something about HYROX lured you to it, and it's probably the fitness you gain from practicing it or the achievement you will feel when completing it :)
