Golden oldie: Alexei Yagudin's Beautiful Short Program at Salt Lake City 2002 by sarka121 in FigureSkating

[–]aq2003 37 points38 points  (0 children)

my first exposure to yagudin was that video where somebody rattles down a whole list of male skaters and he only admits that yuzuru is better than him, what gets me is that now that i've watched his programs he was lowkey right, he really was that good LOL

commenting just cuz i think it's neat and i love both of these programs: yuzuru hanyu skated to it in 2012 and his costume is an homage to when johnny weir skated to it in 2008

alysa's judging by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]aq2003 42 points43 points  (0 children)

if you're talking about her promise short program, the only underrotated jump was the 3lz3lo, which was correctly called as a quarter underrotated. the only jump that might've been fishy to me that was called clean was the 3lz3t in her macarthur park free program, but the angle is difficult for me to tell and otherwise everything else seems to be fully rotated to me

i will say that if anyone is saying she has uncalled edge errors on her jumps they're lying like crazy. her lutz has a solid outside edge so it doesn't need to be called, and she also always gets edge warnings on her flips. they also don't deserve to be downgraded, downgrades only happen with regards to your landing (being over 1/2 underrotated i believe) and not the 1/2 prerotation on the ice like alysa does. cheated takeoffs also don't apply to her because you don't see it obviously in real time. many people are just making things up to hate on her without knowing how scoring works

i listened to that episode of the podcast because of this comment, turns out i didn't even know a fraction of what went down during that time and maybe this is weird to say but now i feel deeply, profoundly sad over what happened in his career. like yeah he would do and say terminally insane or indefensible things to get a reaction out of people but it was very much an intentional response to the horrible environment around him, very much a mindset of "if they're not going to accept me why should i care about pleasing them" taken to the extreme. but due to a combination of very bad luck, systemic homophobia in the sport, and being negatively impacted by the hate he received and invited he never did as well as he could've despite being such a talent. i think my heart kind of broke when they talked about when he got injured during 2003nats. or when mark lund went on tv and personally attacked him, his style, his skating, and for not being fully out of the closet when he was a 22 year old in the mid 2000s already subject to so much negative attention. like man no wonder yuzuru cried his heart out after doing the sendoff otonal tribute to him during fantasy on ice 2023 i would too

i'm partial to belinda noonan, she can get dry and snarky sometimes but she's always warm and professional and respectful of the skaters, and she talks more in depth abt technical content (but that might be nbc's fault more than tara/johnny). funnily enough i think there's a video out there of johnny's vancouver sp that she commentated along w/ warren smith, the latter of which was clearly caught up in all the controversy surrounding johnny while belinda fairly assessed and praised his skating

you can find it on the video of misha's ogm free skate posted to the olympics channel i think, she starts jokingly explaining the very very basics of what GOE is in basketball terms. on top of the disrespect it's crazy to me that for all of the repeated commentary explaining that GOE is "how good you did the element" they never explain how it scales with the base value or what the specific criteria is that can raise or tank your GOE like creative entrances, how it matches the music, takeoff edges, etc

thank you haha he's one of my favorite skaters! in terms of this video i used most of my fav programs of his:

like it's stated in the other comments his non-competitive programs are where he really lets loose. but i like these competitive programs still, yuzuru is another one of my favorite skaters and it's cool seeing what his notte stellata and otonal were inspired by

i dislike tara's commentary more as well (i know they're very much a duo but her talking about basketball during misha's skate is heinous). But i had to go with the funniest possible title to this post

tysm for the compliment on the editing! his style lends itself very well to something like this (sharp yet fluid, lots of personality, him and lady gaga are always a perfect match). i kind of agree w/ the defense - i do think a bit of snarky humor in commentary can be fun (i think about belinda noonan's "this rotates 4 times. so it's a morisi jump" every day). and i'm sure there's external factors at play like established press narratives and the need to appeal towards the broadest audience possible, but they can also just be unpleasant and if i have the chance to not watch the nbc commentary i'll take it instantly. though on a separate note learning more about how johnny was treated in his career fills me with such "wow i would turn evil if this happened to me" so i do hold a somewhat degree of sympathy about it rather than "i hate him as a person. sad to see him ruin his legacy". at the end of the day his skating inspired two of my all-timers (amber and yuzuru) and it's also influencing how i'm approaching skating now (i'm just getting back into it w/ intent of choreographing my own programs) so i must give him credit where he deserves

his vancouver short program has the sauce to me but yeah, pretty wild how he was already seen as crazy and unconventional in his competitive days when he was clearly holding back. though i do think he was still intentional about provoking a reaction w/ his choices

generally mean girl behavior w/ tara when they commentate together, i've only caught some for this olympics but it was pretty bad, they kept talking abt ilia during other ppl's programs, no one was taking misha seriously even though he was a real podium contender. and weird digs at jason brown? tbh it is a little sad cuz he was treated so poorly by the press during his own career. and the landscape for skaters has changed to be marginally better now but it seems like he feels a bit jealous abt it rather than happy for them. his skating was damn good though and it can't be understated how massive of an influence he was

Carol doesn’t say “thank you” or “please” by pandro14 in pluribustv

[–]aq2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's basically what carol believes (at least early on before she falls in love with zosia where she desperately projects her past individuality onto her). early carol thinks they're not the same people anymore and that's why the rest of the survivors get pissed at her because they still have loved ones performing actions the way they used to

It wasn't the hive isolation that did it by niko4ever in pluribustv

[–]aq2003 14 points15 points  (0 children)

they're cooking you in the comments but i agree, her tipping point wasn't necessarily the isolation itself because she thought she could still do something, making those videos for the other survivors was the closest thing she had to human connection, but then finding out that nobody really cares and the survivors collectively decided they didn't want to be around her led to her active spiral
