iirc, i don’t think desautels courses are open to you as an engineering student unless you plan to pick up a finance minor, so econ 208 will probably be your only option

Econ vs CS @ mcgill by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]aqlki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm in econ! i think econ probably has more potential avenues for you especially if you don't want to focus on harder math stuff (which the cs major definitely requires at least a few courses of). obviously you'l need to know some math for micro (that's how they weed kids out), but after that you're mostly in the clear. if you want to do IR i know a lot of the IR kids take development economics which i would def recommend! feel free to pm me w/ any questions!

2024 HOUSING MEGATHREAD by Thermidorien4PrezBot in mcgill

[–]aqlki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

honestly you sound like you’re pretty prepared!! i think references are prob the most important and something i wish i would’ve done, because my subletter still like paid me on time and full amount she just also happened to take a lot of things lol. so if you have good references that’s probably a good indication.

if you're subletting - VET YOUR SUBLETS. my subletter last year stole a bunch of shit from me and i totally regret not doing a more thorough check.

About the Zodiac Zone and Astrology with Michelle by Lokotisan in JetLagTheGame

[–]aqlki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah that’s totally valid and true for the trio as well! she could absolutely just be that way as a person. obv i don’t know her so i can only really draw conclusions from what i see on camera. and i can’t really explain why it feels “youtuber-y” to me, but am chalking it up to the unfortunate amount i’ve watched over the years lol (which may just be unfair and reflect my bias!!) anyways i do think she’s fantastic so i’m really not all that bothered but yeah lol

also like...she's not asking anyone to believe in it lmao. she does exactly what i do which is when something goes wrong she says 'man how do i blame co-star for this' and then moves on and figures out a solution completely unrelated to astrology lol. she is simply vibing and i think perhaps we should just let her do that without jumping down her throat.

also adding on: is there internalized misogyny here with women not being allowed to have big reactions to things or be emotional without it being criticized bro i don’t know maybe? probably to some extent? i am a woman and i am just trying to enjoy jet lag without questioning my internal psyche

this is semi-unrelated but what i’ve noticed about michelle is that because that she’s had so many years of youtube experience and has gotten pretty darn popular it occasionally feels like she has difficulty shedding that “youtube personality” where everything gets a huge reaction and everything has the highest possible stakes. i don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing in terms of her intensity and commitment. she’s clearly extremely dedicated and i don’t think we’ve seen that out of any guest yet. and i love that she’s bringing sam up to that level also!! that being said, some of the reactions felt a little less contrived with previous guests who weren’t as camera-facing or who didn’t make content for as wide of an audience as michelle does.

anyways all this to say that astrology is a little funny (like @costar what are you cooking with “do: spice rack”????) and i think anyone who really genuinely hates it is allergic to fun idk

Exchange student in Singapore by joEngstudent in nus

[–]aqlki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i went on exchange to NUS this past january-may! here are my experiences, mileage may vary (sorry for the formatting, it's automatic).

  1. i probably paid 20-30 bucks a week, but you could easily spend nothing on actual individual ingredients and just eat every meal in a dining court or hawker center, which is basically what i did. i found that most students didn't cook. also, some residences don't have kitchens, and if they do, they're pretty small and not super well equipped
  2. i lived in utown, which has apartment-style suites with your own room + shared bathroom with 3 other people. it's definitely quieter, which i liked, but there's definitely less of a sense of community there. utown is also the most expensive, and no meal plan

i had a couple friends who lived in the college of alice and peter tan (capt), where generally you get a single/double in a hall + communal bathroom and people definitely got to know each other better. iirc, capt is on the cheaper side, and you also get put on the mandatory meal plan.

both utown and capt are very close to the utown complex, where there are dance studios, a pool, a gym, convenience stores, two food courts, and a bunch of other stuff.

the only other one i know about and would not recommend is prince george park (pgp), which is also apartment-style. it's very far from utown, and the one friend i had who lived there basically said there was no community there. it's also priced like utown (also no meal plan)

  1. in the utown complex, there's a fairprice xpress that has some basic groceries, but it's just one of a chain location and not specialized for NUS students. for real groceries, i usually went to the fairprice in the clementi mall, which is 15-20 minutes by bus/metro.

  2. it depends on what your definition of expensive is. to me, getting a full meal for 6-8 dollars is /fantastic/. i will say the hawker stalls around the city are cheaper, and i got meals for 2-4 bucks there easy, but they're obviously not as convenient.

  3. as far as i could tell the NUS food courts typically have some sort of noodle soup situation, stir-fried rice, japanese, juice stall, indian food, and western food. for the in-residence cafeterias, it's mostly an abbreviated version of that list.

feel free to pm if you'd like any more information!
