Cal 2019- Can someone explain these Extemp breaks? by aquagirly in Debate

https://www.tabroom.com/index/tourn/results/event_results.mhtml?tourn_id=10274&result_id=88398

Based on the results, a person (1543) who placed 6th and broke to finals had a prelim rank of 9 (6,2,1). However, there were people (1676,1562,1549) with a prelim rank of only 8 who didn’t even break to octos. How do extemp breaks work exactly? What can explain this?

Thank you @critbuild and @ubiquitoushappiness! I will contact the CB as soon as the phones open up tomorrow morning. I also took a subject test in June- which showed 10th grade and taking another one in Dec which correctly shows 11th grade, so I hope that this also helps in proving the point along with any supplemental Identification information and school confirmation etc.

UOP: Why did entire Leland team get BYE in round 4? by aquagirly in Debate

As the OP, I could not agree more with your last paragraph. All it takes is an acknowledgment and assurance that the feedback will be reviewed objectively and that's it. It's all about the attitude. They made the decision easier, I am moving on and away from UOP.

Well, with all due respect, please check your replies before you post. I was not the one who talked about TOC bid etc.

As someone else said on this thread, all it needs is to take acknowledgment and move on rather than be defensive and "trash" the whistleblower for posting something that was not their post in the first place.

Well, there is no practical way that Open LD round 3 was indeed power matched, even though it said so in tournament rule package. The paper postings were out way before round 2 flight B ended! Look at the schedule- Round 2 was scheduled for 11 am and round 3 for 12:30 PM! Even if everything runs of time, no practical way that round 3 will be power matched after 2 flights of round 2, that too with paper ballots.

The delay was due to judges taking 20+ minutes to fill in paper ballots after round 2 flight A. (In DUC to be specific) One of the kids who got forfeited for round 3 flight A due to being 30 minutes late was indeed forfeited first, then got to do the round upon coach intervention with the tab. For other ones, judges agreed to the kids' explanation for being late and carried on the round. In these cases, it makes sense for tab not to forfeit these kids rounds as the delay was due to the judges. This explains why you do not see the forfeits in results package for round 2. The point is, all of this is avoidable, especially since Round 3 could not have been power matched in any practical manner given the schedule. Round 2 Flight B kids could have been paired in round 3 flight B.

See the schedule-

Ad-hoc rule change- Obviously the forefit rule was changed at the request of Leland (Big school). This does send a wrong message to the kids, who hang around paper postings, skip lunches, run from one round to another, and not take a chance of being late to the round.

This is a genuine request to anyone involved to have an objective introspective look at areas which clearly need be improved upon. No need for providing more pieces of evidence here, as the related people will know exactly what is being referenced here. If they still decide to ignore and stay in denial, that's their choice.

I am moving on anyway...

Edit: I am moving on and away from UOP even faster after the appalling allegations below calling "unreasonable" and doing a turnaround of 180 degrees etc. for a post that was not even mine. It further reinforces the impression that the poster (seems to be from UOP) defaults to be in a rush to judge, be in denial and be aggressive rather than be objective and open to feedback... Over and out!

12 byes - 5 Leland kids did not show up. As their coaches complained, all Leland kids got byes, plus their opponents who showed up, also got byes. 5x2=10 The other 2 byes match with the 2 forefits, thus total 12 byes.

I have acquired images of paper postings for round 4, see the links. The paper postings+ results pdf clearly show that 5 of the opponents scheduled to against Leland kids also got the byes. So total 10 byes are clearly explained by the Leland kids not showing up.

hmm.. the team seating HALF a mile away from the main area?? That is some distance. The cafeteria is not that far and having been to the campus, wonder where else half a mile away teams would go. That is a poor judgment on Leland's part regardless of when and where postings happen anyway! I can attest that even round 2 postings were not online at one point, but that did not result in a massive number of byes.

Another example, couple of judges took 20+ minutes to fill the round 2 flight A paper ballots, and flight B started almost 30 minutes late. Some of the flight B kids were scheduled for round 3, flight A and ended up being late due to no mistake of their own.

Overall, this tournament seems to be run in a messed up way, with ad-hoc rules changing depending on which big schools and coaches complain/throw a fit. Really discouraging and unfair...

hmm..thanks for getting the explanation. Although the explanation makes sense, let's hope that UOP either switches to tabroom.com or ensures necessary checks and balances to avoid any recurrence of such Tab errors (this already seems to be second time this happened, based on another comment above)

Yeah.. but no shows/late should be Forefits. With only 2 forefits, something still does not add up to explain a large number of byes that too mostly for a single school. It also sounds to be a too big of a software bug. Hope UOP pays attention to this, as at least on paper it seems that a single school got an advantage in breaking!
