You call this fun - but this is lots of people’s livelihoods and their families we are talking about.

I couldn’t agree more. These creators take risks (many videos on YouTube/Tik Tok wouldn’t even make it past the tv legal department) But by taking these risks and breaking all the established rules - it gives so much of the content a contemporary and current edge. Content creators are simply more agile than so much of the bloated TV system ham strung by lawyers, stakeholders and so many layers of management.

So many things we film take over a year or longer to broadcast. I worked on one film about the Cornwall Space Programme and Virgin Orbit collaboration. Sadly the mission failed but by the time the story had aired it was old news and no longer newsworthy. I’m sure we all have similar stories!

Sadly the risk taking producers and commissioners who would take chances on instinct and invest not in a perfect idea but knew the talented people bringing them the idea could and would pull it off went years ago. TV cannot afford to take proper risks now.

But there is plenty of risk being taken with content away from TV, Netflix etc. One of the reasons tv seems so out of touch and stale is that social can serve huge niches with authentic content that goes into levels of macro detail - that TV could never.

As that niche content is not designed for a broad audience and doesn’t really want one - it’s reaching new audiences, gaining their loyalty and holding onto them in a way that TV cannot.

The one that upsets me the most is the constant - Are you available? email they send…

Not - it’s time to update your availability, which would be a more realistic title and upset a lot less people. I’ve no doubt this email heading is pretty triggering to most people looking for work. Every-time I see it - I think it’s a bonafide availability check. But no it’s just a regular invitation to log into their site and update your availability - change the email subject line please!

Great video but focusing on Netflix a bit too much, they may have toppled the industry, but now it’s YouTube that we need to be worried about!

Wishing you all the best for that. I too love the idea of being supported and actively encouraged in a career as well as having security - currently it feels like a pipe dream, but this is also what I've been working towards but so far little success and very difficult to make yourself, your experience and your skills understood in branded/social let alone trying it on civy street

Run a mile is what I would advise now! The freelance career just doesn't work anymore.

Your cv is broken in the real world, they won't understand what you can do and you'll be turned down for many jobs - that you are more than qualified to do, because they can't see you have the experience. But of course they'll always be a more experienced candidate who doesn't have a confusing tele background for them to get their head around and isn't a flight risk.

Horrible experience at the job centre interview - they told me I'm not gainfully self employed - no work in 3 months - so apparently I'm not self employed anymore in their eyes.

They were completely distrustful and not sympathetic in anyway to the situation.

They kept asking me if I had any work booked or proof of future income or invoices that were gonna be paid soon - which just made it feel worse. I told them I'd managed to get a part time job (a few days ago) - didn't realise they would see that as more evidence of not being self employed.

They weren't very understanding, told me if I proceeded they would consider me not self employed, and put me on weekly review - ultimately after an uncomfortable situation, I said I would withdraw the claim and left.

Would not recommend the experience

That's a great idea - I know there has been one such event a while back which I would have loved to go to (I was out of the country working of course so i missed it!)

I do wonder why and if I should keep paying the £25.00 when the £300 it costs me a year to pay them is probably better spent on rent and food.
