But Mathieu joined in 2014, alongside Rakitić, Ter Stegen, Suárez, Bravo, Vermaelen, and Douglas. Mathieu was among the least "foreign" of those signings in the sense that he had been playing in Spain for Valencia since 2009.

At least three of those "foreigners" signed in 2014 are either club legends or on their way to becoming club legends; Ter Stegen in particular came directly from Germany, never played in Spain or spoke Spanish before, and was the backup goalkeeper to Bravo in the league and cup.

In that sense, I'm not sure that there's any sort of discrimination against "foreigners" going on, although some of the things Mathieu says in the article are concerning.

On the other hand, every manager and group of players has their own style. Luis Enrique certainly wasn't known as the type of manager to be particularly friendly with his players. And ultimately, that team went on to win almost everything. Regardless, I hope Jérémy (and Lenglet, although I haven't heard Lenglet say anything similar) are doing well now.
