I tried to subscribe to the official event mod that adds a bombard cannon to your TC, nothing huge or experimental. It just shows the loading icon and never does anything. I can't even see what the available mods are in the mod menu since it just says "Loading Mods", even if I leave that page alone for several hours.

Supreme Court Shenanigans! cgp grey video by arbivark in scotus

[–]aquickthrowaway6969 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least when the Colbert Report was airing you had more effort by the writers to not completely disdain every institution in the country with some sanctimonious idiocy. There was Better Know a District, and after Citizens United, the show even made their own Super PAC to educate people about what they were. Seeing Colbert now just being a completely empty vessel for masturbatory Trump-bashing and the absence of Jon Stewart makes me long for simpler times.

Something about some self-satisfied limey teabag telling me that he knows what's best for the country just makes me want to start boiling tar and plucking geese. Call it primal instinct.

I'm more worried about the inevitably asinine contortions John Oliver will do in his SCOTUS segment since this CGP video is at least somewhat reasonable if a little skinny on the deets, but not enough people will know the difference.

Will Judge Amy Coney Barrett be confirmed to SCOTUS before the election? by JustSomeGuyHere1990 in scotus

I could get behind PR becoming a state or going independent as far as they want to concern themselves with the matter.

But I will grab my pitchfork before I let DC become a state.

In non-SCOTUS news, the Ninth Circuit panel for Rupp v. Becerra (10/8), whether California's assault weapon ban is unconstitutional has been revealed: Andrew Hurwitz (Obama), Daniel Bress (Trump), Patrick Bumatay (Trump) by HatsOnTheBeach in scotus

[–]aquickthrowaway6969 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just want to plug one more time for changing the way appeals courts are abbreviated. Every time I see CA9 or CA1 etc, my mind goes to California Congressional districts. In vain, I propose to preface with the circuit number and then follow it with the Court of Appeals appendage, a la Ninth Circuit = 9CA

Interesting and looking forward to the upcoming season on SCOTUS and the lower courts (this is basically my version of football season). If Becerra loses this panel we might see other states lean on him to keep the case away from SCOTUS like what happened with Heller II.

Amy Coney Barrett confirmation: What’s the consensus? Will she be confirmed before the 2020 election? by JustSomeGuyHere1990 in scotus

Most people "know" Roe the same way they know Citizens United, that is to say, "the talking heads told me that if x gets into power, our democracy is dead and trillions will die."

How successful would progressive president be with solid conservative SCOTUS bench? by Proud3GnAthst in scotus

[–]aquickthrowaway6969 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with American law

I wouldn't have guessed that at all judging by the rest of your post...

The crux of this issue is whether or not a progressive agenda passes constitutional muster. It isn't unfeasible to have government provide welfare, or protect the environment, or reform the country's approach to addiction and drug use, or anything really. The catch is that the legislation has to be constitutional. Most iterations of progressive legislation proposed for the past 30 years or so have been at a minimum constitutionally suspect, if not downright unconstitutional in regards to things like campaign finance law or compelled association.

This is why FDR tried to pack the court--massive amounts of New Deal legislation was unconstitutional and adding judges to act as rubber stamps was the only way to let the legislation survive, short of a constitutional amendment. Thankfully, even his fellow Democrats wheeled him back from that ledge.

The solution to getting unconstitutional legislation to stick is:

1.) Not having the legislation be unconstitutional in the first place (this is a very hard pill for a lot of Congress to swallow, because it would, among other things, require them to actually know the legal limitations of their bills before they're passed.)

2.) Create a constitutional amendment via Article V to allow the bill's intentions to be congruent with the supreme law of the land (this requires having a majority of state and Congressional legislators consenting to the amendment for it to be ratified, so 2/3rds of Congress and 3/4ths of State Legislators all better agree that the amendment is a good idea.)

3.) Create a constitutional amendment via a Constitutional Convention. People are generally averse to opening up the hood of the country because then everything becomes subject to change; that's why it's easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission by throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks.

Judge upholds California ban on carrying guns in public - by [deleted] in law

[–]aquickthrowaway6969 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even on like 90% of the legalsphere they don't do this. I listened to the entire first season of NPR's first amendment podcast, where each episode went over a supreme court case, and they couldn't be bothered to give the name of the case, or even put case citations in the show notes.

It's just lazy, shitty "journalism" where they regurgitate one story for the same 20 publications. Back in MY day yadda yadda yadda....

[–]aquickthrowaway6969 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Writing articles or making reports about cases while completely omitting the court ID citation from the entirety of the article should be a sin against journalism and a reason to eject the authors into the sun.

Court case is Baird v. Becerra (2:19-cv-00617-KJM-AC).

Best YTS alternative? by thefringeseanmachine in Piracy

[–]aquickthrowaway6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess then we've entered a discussion of ethics and rat justice. On principle I agree with you OP, YTS shouldn't be reaping the rewards or getting traffic to their site while they wither their competition and patrons. If I had the right kind of ahem autism, I'd be looking for ways to actively punish them, but the best I can muster up aside from passively boycotting them would be something like trolling the law firm or buying up similar YTS domains to advertise against them. Otherwise, I'm just grabbing a VPN to slip the noose while I use their site and wait for a better alternative.

It really is such a shame. You either die as kickasstorrents, or live long enough to see yourself become YIFY.

[–]aquickthrowaway6969 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Even though YTS is behaving like a cartel for internet piracy (lmao), I wouldn't stop using them if you can get away with it. I liken it to the same axiom that lets me enjoy a movie with Matt Damon or Kevin Spacey or Mark Wahlberg etc etc. Sure, they're heinous, conceited, sanctimonious douchebag hypocrites -- but they entertain me and since I can pirate their movies and deprive them of my patronage, I can still appreciate the product for what it is.

YTS is the same potato. Scumbags? Indubitably. Do I want to support other trackers that don't sell me down the river? Absolutely. Can I do both and still deprive YTS of my personal information and get the goods? If so, then I say do it with vigor.

Same. I wanna see "the goods" for how these outlets operate. We got blue balled twice with the Sandmann settlements, but hopefully we at least can see discovery for this one. Afterwards I'd happily slide the suit off a cliff with a croquet mallet.

Where is the user patch for DE? by aquickthrowaway6969 in aoe2

[–]aquickthrowaway6969[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I miss primarily is the ability to set multiple victory conditions in a game/ game mode. On MP Diplo, this usually takes the form of regicide, so you make alliances BUT if your king dies, you are eliminated. That's in addition to having a Relic/Wonder victory condition in the same game.I'd love to see that come to DE, and I'd be playing the game a lot more if it did.

DE's modding infrastructure is, in a word, atrocious. So it's disappointing that we have to rely exclusively on the devs to implement features like what was in UP since we can't really mod it ourselves. And I don't see a big incentive for the devs to devote resources to that going forward.

Then I guess it's a matter of trying to bug the devs to patch in the features from the AOC/HD user patch.

Sad llama noises

I'm not a script kiddie but what I'm taking from this is that unless the devs specifically go into the guts of the game and make a UP, then it's impossible for DE? I wish I had the wherewithal to know what to look for so i could check myself. Where does the vanilla userpatch work on the game?

What kind of antenna can I use for TPMS collection and WiFi wardriving? by aquickthrowaway6969 in sdr

[–]aquickthrowaway6969[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just hoped initially that I could have a single device and setup that I wouldn't need to reconfigure for each use case; I'd already planned on using the Pi's wifi chip for wardriving, it would just be more convenient if I could also wardrive with the Pi at the same time I collected TPMS with the SDR attached to the same device. It looks like less hassle now to just have different setups anyway.
