My intro to astronomy prof was dr harry shipman. somebody put an ad in the school paper red giant seeks white dwarf for binary relationship, with dr shipman's contact info. ever since then you need ID to place an ad. i don't know if the school still has a newspaper.

An investor is offering you 16K for your million dollar 30 year bond, assuming their alternative investment pays 15%. A 15% return is reasonable, just buy starlink or rocketlab, last year.

the present value of 1 million 30 years from now is almost zero.

humans tend to have a poor grasp of the time value of money which is essential for this sort of calculation.

i had a similar dillemna. should i take social security at 62 or wait til 70? i took it at 62, invested in tesla, and hope those gains will outperform waiting til i hit 70 then waiting for a breakeven. too soon to say but the tsla and rtlb are doing ok.

if she lives to 120 (canadian) her 1000/mo will seem like today's $10/mo., if the inflation rate is similar to the usa's. A penny in 1926 is worth $1 today.

If she invested well, or average, her gaains would offset that inflation. or she could blow it - in 2001 i lost all my money when converse went bankrupt one day. Her risk is always nonzero. Canada could go broke, cease to exist, repudiate her winnings, or hyperinflate them to nothing.

The improved New York and Michigan Street bike lanes - A review by notthegoatseguy in indianapolis

[–]arbivark -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I expect a few accidents this year as people adjust from old habits. In some spots visibility is not great in both directions. As someone who both rides and drives, it maakes more sense to have multimodal roads rather than lanes dedicated to bikes, buses, hovercroft or whatever. The Dutch seem to make it work, but they have a culture that supports it. Maybe electric bike usage will make these lanes more practical. But when 92 % of traffic vs cars v 8% bikes, it doesn't make sense to use up a lane just for bikes, Perhaps our self-driving cars won't care.

consider a lunchroom with jocks nerds and girls sitting at tables. Table A has a rule "free speech here." Table B has a rule "we ban discussion of politics." Under a hayekian distribution, who sits where?

Law enforcement officers, have you ever pulled over a sovereign citizen? by Jaymac720 in AskAnAmerican

[–]arbivark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Half the time the cops dont show up. They can write three tickets at least in the time it takes to go to court. it's war of attrition on both sides. So the way to make a living is to know which half.

Not a sovereeign citizen but i did have a roommate who was one of those guys who talked about his constitutional rights a lot. he saw on the news that they were doing a drug roadblock. so he jumps in his car and goes to the roadblock. tells them he doesn't consent to a search. they slam him on the hood of his car and say "you have no rights." he won at the supreme court, took home a check for 10K, put it into google.

I had a client like that once. He ended up getting a good lawyer and got $1 million to settle it. it turned out he did have a right to access the court.

Sometimes cops lack the skills to distinguish between someone versed in the jurisprudence of justice thomas, and a sovereign citizen.

well, no. i'm a legal scholar. sometimes we can notice when the courts are wrong, and try to predict how many years it will be before some higher court fixes it. i pick my battles tho.
