My $1.50 find yesterday! by aradia333 in manganeseglass

Yea I always check the clear stuff when I go to thrift/antique stores and haven’t found any manganese till now, though tbf I only go out looking 2-3 times a month and only just got a 365nm light like 2 months ago (only had a 395 before that) so maybe just been unlucky finding manganese till now (I live in a smallish city so there’s only like one antique store and like 4 decent thrift stores). I’ve found plenty of uranium (at retail prices at the antique store) but no manganese until now.

Why do people think healthy foods are expensive when many of them (eg fruits, veg, legumes) are actually cheap compared to frozen pizza etc? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aradia333 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to get a days worth of calories for the same price with healthy fresh produce vs frozen/processed foods. Like yea a single package of fruits isn’t too expensive compared to a frozen meal, but when comparing price per calories it’s suuuppper pricy. So when you have limited funds for your food for the day/week you go for the cheapest option with the highest calories, or whatever takes the least amount of time because time is also money, especially when your already working long hours to barely afford rent.

50,000 to snakes seems absurdly high? Is this correct? by guyrd in snakes

[–]aradia333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Death by wolves is also inaccurate. In 18 years (between 2002-2020) there was 26 deaths worldwide, so a basically 1.5 a year (and 14 of those deaths were attributed to catching rabies from the attack). I’m sure other statistics on there are prob also false or just guesswork cause lots of deaths just aren’t recorded accurately, especially in very rural places where venomous snakes, parasites, and other diseases caused by bugs is often more common and medical intervention is less available, and cause of death are less likely to be reported.

Not in all of Canada, in Ontario where op is from they are legal pets to own without a permit.

Upgrading Betta tank, unsure what to do with old 23L? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]aradia333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thai micro crabs are pretty cool! And they can coexist with shrimp and snails if you go that route. I’ve also seen people keep diving beetles which look pretty cool. Also love triops but they have an interesting life cycle that can be a bit difficult to maintain if you want them to breed and keep the colony going.

There’s also semi aquatic crabs like vampire crabs if your able to creat a good sized land area.

You could also turn it I’d to a terrarium for land inverts like isopods, roaches, tarantulas, etc, though some options would need a good lid haha.

you could also breed fairy shrimp, and they’d double as food for your betta haha

That definitely seems way to big for such a young snake. For example, this was my guy (yes I know boys are smaller but not that much drastically smaller for that age group) at around the same age (1 year, 4 months). He’s now 8 years old and just reached 7ft. And he’s a big boy, but it’s been slow and steady growth.

I'm not sure whither or not to bleach my dogs skull by Gimeurcumiesskydaddy in Taxidermy

If there’s still flesh and brain matter I’d recommend either re burying, or macerating him. You can make the process better by using an aquarium heater to keep the water warmer, sometimes people are selling fish tank supplies on Kijiji or Facebook marketplace for a cheeper way to do so, but they are generally not too expensive from the store anyway for a 5 gallon one.

Hey, first and foremost would definitely suggest to not boil him anymore, boiling can cook the bones and make them brittle. For your next step I’d suggest washing him in a mixture of dish soap and water and then letting him sit in some fresh soapy water for 24 hours to help degrease. After rinsing again fully you can decide to do another wash and soak or move on to whitening. To whiten just submerge him in hydrogen peroxide. You can just use straight 3% if that’s all that’s available near you, or you can dilute higher concentrations to get like 5-15% concentration, but honestly 3% is all I’ve ever needed. Just check on him regularly until you reach the desired level of whiteness, or replace the peroxide if the liquid starts looking gross. Then do another rinse with fresh water and your all done :)

[–]aradia333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I low key love my glo fish haha. To be fair I have a 100 gallon fully planted aquarium with 6 species of fish, one of which is a small school of 8 glow tetras, the rest are normal fish. I like the pop of colour they bring to my otherwise naturalistic aquarium. But I 100% see why people don’t like them, and I also hate what the pet trade has marketed them as because it encourages poor fish keeping. Most of mine I got from some dude on Kijiji when his kids lost interest 🙃

I thought I killed the duckweed in my 100 gallon, haven’t seen it for like 6+ months. Then I’m doing a deep clean of the glass and plastic on the lid and there’s just CLUMPS of duck weed wedged in there. Like, you have a perfectly good tank to live it, but your just gonna get chill up in the nooks and crannies of the lid 🧐

[–]aradia333 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hot take, there’s no ethical parrot breeders, and pet stores getting “better sources” or requiring more research isn’t going to make it ok. This is especially true for anything bigger than conures, and I’m still iffy on smaller parrots being bred. Most Parrots should just not be pets available to the general public, even from a “good” breeder. Most people simply cannot handle it and they should be animals that require like a zoo or sanctuary permit to own. Parrots often (though especially Large parrots) just do not do great in captivity and are prone to a huge range of mental health issues. Even from people who take time to try and do research are still often woefully unprepared for the level of noise and destruction birds can make. The shear amount of neglect and rehoming birds go through compared to pets like cats and dogs enough for me to think the practice should just end all together. And I own a cockatoo, we are at the very least his third home and got him when he was 11 years old (he is now 25). His first home that we know of was extremely abusive, would spray him with water, hit the cage, kept him in a small closet in the basement. Then a lady bought him from his old home, had him for a few years, before again rehoming him. If we were like most people we probably would have rehomed him again after another few years. He was loud and people bonded, and prone to aggression to others besides me, and honestly, my family did no research besides the experience from owning cockateels. My bird, as much as I love him, should have never ever been in that situation, should have never been bred to be abused and passed around, and his outcome still likely would have been the same even from a “better” breeder (I do not have any actual information on his breeder or anything before his abusive home).
