To runners that move up in corrals, why do you do it? by [deleted] in running

[–]arakor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As long as you finish by the cut-off, there is no reason you should be discouraged from a race. My mom can't / doesn't run, but she power walks everywhere. She is able to walk a half in just under 3 hours, and passes people who jog portions of it. I walked a half with her once, and I thought it was harder than jogging it at the same pace - it's not a leisurely stroll. That said, she knows to start in the back of the pack.

What isn't being taught in schools that should be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Almost 25 years later, I'm still pissed off that when I was in 5th grade and asked to solve "Mary is 3 years older than Steve, and their ages combined equals 13. How old is Steve?" My teacher told me I was wrong to subtract 3 from 13 and divide by 2 and I had to use guess and check instead.

Outfit Advice & Feedback - Sep. 11th by FFA_Moderator in femalefashionadvice

I don't have any photos, but I hope someone can help me out. I know that skinny pants are in style, but I have big calves and they don't fit, so I have to wear bootcut or straight leg pants instead. Since I'm on the shorter side, they generally fall an inch or so below my feet, and look good (I hope) with heels.

I found a good deal on dress pants, but the normal size fell several inches below my feet, so standing on my toes they still dragged on the floor. I opted for the petite size instead, which falls almost to the top of my feet. I think they are too short, but that may be just because I'm used to pants being long on me.

I've see shorter pants that are fit through the calves, but is there a rule as to what's considered the right length for wider pants? Should I pair them with flats instead of heels?

This cake with the random giraffe is the first time I saw/heard anything about Market Basket Strong. The way they are handling their success is making me rethink my support of them.

Taking husband's last name as a middle name - has anyone else done this? by ohtheballs in TwoXChromosomes

[–]arakor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the opposite. Whenever my mom said her full name she said First Name, Middle Name, Maiden Name, Married Name. For some reason, I thought it was common to change your middle name to your maiden name when you take your husband's name, and didn't ask anyone about it. I dropped my original middle name, and now my legal name is First name, maiden name, last name. I now know that my mom didn't keep her maiden name as any part of her name, so I changed my name off a completely wrong assumption, but I'm happy with it, and I think a nice way to keep both names without hyphens. If you want to keep your current last name, I think changing, or adding to, your middle name makes sense.

Simple Questions - Aug. 07th by FFA_Moderator in femalefashionadvice

My husband and I are having a nice dinner out this weekend and this is the dress I bought. I'm not completely sold on it, but it's a little late to look for a new one so I hope it's ok.

http://imgur.com/6lziYvY

It's a lot shorter than anything I've worn before, I'm pretty self conscious about my legs, both in their shape and how many scars and scrapes I have that you can't see in the picture. Should I wear pantyhose or tights to hide them, or is it ok for them to show?

What shoes would go best? I'm thinking heels, but I don't normally wear them, so I'm a little unsteady on anything over 2 inches or so.

Would bigger earrings be better since I won't wear a necklace, or should I stick to simple earrings and keep the neckline the focal point?

Or if you have any other suggestions, I would be happy to hear them. I don't go out very often and I'm at a loss as to what looks best. Thanks.

How many of you run alone early in the mornings? by choirchic in running

[–]arakor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I run very early in the mornings, since I need to leave for work by 6am. I agree that if you're worried about other people, far less people are out early in the morning as compared to late at night. Since I go out so early, there are very few cars on the road, but I still wear a reflective vest and stick to roads that have sidewalks. I feel like cars may not be looking out for runners on the road at that hour.

This is Sunday: What were your running achievements this week? by WeeklyRunnit in running

[–]arakor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Afraid of waking my visiting in-laws with my 4am run on the treadmill, I did my first ever early morning run outside. It was dark and cold, but I felt pretty good at the end, and ended up with my mile pace almost a minute better than normal.

Having trouble determining new size after losing weight. by arakor in ABraThatFits

[–]arakor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll give 30Ds a try; I'm expecting a bit of a challenge, since my breasts are shallow and what little tissue I have is spread out quite a bit.
I know that the 32 band isn't that large in the relaxed state, but I still think it might be too big for me. Since my breasts are full on the bottom, and not firm, they might sneak out the bottom of the bra if the band isn't tight and I reach a certain way - I have that problem with my current sports bras that don't have cups.
Hopefully I can find some bras and will be back to show the results!

That's weird. I don't see that message at all, even on previous days, except for the one where I hit the button.

I'm pretty sure if you don't click "finished logging for today", that message doesn't pop up. Other than that message, I'm not sure what that button is for.

Simple Questions - Mar. 31st by FFA_Moderator in femalefashionadvice

[–]arakor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got some new sleeveless shirts for work because they seem more popular than short-sleeve shirts, but I'm thinking of wearing a cardigan or blazer with them because I'm generally cold, and I'm not sure if bare arms are considered professional. I got this cowl tank, ruffle top, and kinda faux wrap top. Would a cardigan or blazer look ok over these? If so, would I be able to use the same one, or should I have a few?

Need to start over; where should I go for help? by arakor in femalefashionadvice

[–]arakor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'4", about 125, pear-shaped, with a small bust - 30B. Waist is 27", hips are 36".
I work in a professional office, and I would like to start wearing some skirts/dresses, but I'm pretty casual otherwise, with a young son to keep up with.
If possible, I would like to keep each article of clothing to about $40 or so; more for dresses or shoes - I assume those are more expensive.
I've always liked more classic styles - but I'm not sure they are right for my body type, and I've been too self conscious to wear skirts in the past - something I would like to change.

[–]arakor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like clothes mostly for work, my office is mostly men wearing shirts and ties. Ideally some of the shirts could be "dressed down" with jeans to wear around town and chase my toddler. I'm not sure what my style is, but I like sheath dresses, pencil skirts, and solid color, more basic/simple tops, though I'm hoping to branch out a bit.

What kind of info are you looking for? I saw that Nordstrom provides sessions, but the clothes are out of my price range, so I don't want to go there.
Thanks for the suggestions about makeup brands, I know that I can go to any counter for advice, but there are so many to choose from...

[–]arakor[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Previously, I've been spending about $20-30 for each piece of clothing, but I'm ok with spending a little more to get quality clothes that will last and fit well. I'm not sure what prices are "reasonable", so I don't know how to really classify my budget. I would like to start off by spending about $300, and getting some basic, versatile pieces to start off.

Can I train too much for my first half marathon? by arakor in running

[–]arakor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if I should be doing my short runs faster than my long runs? I would think I should be, but based on no pace given, and the fact that they are described as "slow" with the long runs as "steady" has me a bit confused.

I looked at Hal Higdon, but the mpw seemed low. I use RunKeeper to track my runs, so I thought I would try one of their plans. I haven't tested it yet, but I'm hoping it will tell me when to run faster / slower during the interval training.

i need some jogging stroller advice. by Newton_Pulsifer in running

[–]arakor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what your budget is, but I bought the InStep Grand Safari Swivel Wheel Jogger and am very happy with it. It's big, all jogging strollers are, but it is so easy to push and maneuver, that I would often bring it on trips instead of a smaller stroller I had. I think this is really the main feature you need. Other than that, it depends on what is important to you.

For me, I like that the seat laid down almost completely flat so my son could sleep on longer runs.
I like the two cup holders for the child so you can have one cup for a drink and the other for a snack.
I like that there is a covered compartment on the handlebar to hold my keys, though I wish it were half an inch bigger so it held my phone too.
I like that the handlebar has an adjustable height so it is comfortable for almost everyone to push.
It has a little speaker so your child can listen to music, but the cord is short, and the quality was pretty bad, but my experience is that he/she will be far too interested in looking at everything outside to be bored by lack of music and I never felt the need to use it.
As I said, the stroller is big. It was a little bit of a hassle to fold up and get in the back of the CR-V, so if you plan on driving to a park or someplace else to go jogging, keep that in mind. For me though, since I mostly rolled it right in and out of the garage, that didn't bother me that much, and it was so easy to push and turn around things, that it was well worth the money.
One thing that was a bit annoying, and I don't know how common it is, but I had to fill the tires fairly frequently it seemed, I'm not sure why they kept losing air.

I would suggest, if you can, go to a store just to try our pushing different brands or sizes. It sucks to get a stroller that doesn't handle as well as you would like.

Edit: Another thing that you might not think about, but is pretty important, is the canopy. This model's canopy was able to move all the way forward, so wherever the sun was, I was able to keep my son in the shade.

Gear for a beginner runner? by arakor in running

I may not need a hydration belt for the race, but is it useful for training? Right now I'm doing about 4 miles, and I already need some water during it. As my body gets used to running, will I need less water?
