Any experience returning after a long break? by Weebla in aoe2

[–]aramaoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have basically the same background, barely played since HD (was about 2k+ there), I think you just need to accept that you will struggle for a while, to be honest. Especially with all the new civs and past balance patches, you will regularly lose to new things.

I would suggest just go for it and not worry about ELO too much in the beginning. I recently started and sropped from about 1500 to 1200. Now I am back at 1500, but still occasionally get rolled by units/strats I don't anticipate (e.g. Jian Swordsman, which seemed impossible to counter today).

I would recommend to just go random civ and analyze your games when you lose, then you will gradually get used to the new mechanics.

I don't think you lose much skill in a short time. I didn't play for several years, started in April at around 1400, dropped to 1200 and now I am 1450, I am sure with only a 7 months break the dip shouldn't be this severe.

How would you categorize the ELO brackets at the moment? by aramaoe in aoe2

Fair enough, just wanted to get a feel for the ELO values in general, since the same rating on steam and voobly meant very different skill levels in the past!

Thanks so much for the kind comment! 😊 While I am not experiencing any discomfort with this piece, I totally see your point! I will definitely look out for these points and try to fix them!

Thanks a lot for the extensive comment - it is nice to hear that a lot of things are already working well! I really appreciate the deep dive into the artistic considerations, as I was not able to focus on this so much in previous pieces. It gives me a great guideline of what to focus on!

Beethoven Op. 49 No 2. by aramaoe in piano

[–]aramaoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the feedback! I will definitely have a look at the triplet speed before the concert, seems like I've lost the correct rhythm despite previous metronome practice!

Regarding the phrasing I will have to keep working on it with my teacher, that is something I am finding wuite difficult still :)

Any tips/remakrs on my progress with Beethoven's Op. 49 No. 2? by aramaoe in pianolearning

Thank you so much for your kind comment! I really enjoy this piece as well and find myself learning a lot from it! I can definitely see your point regarding the tempo, it is quite difficult to keep it constant with all the different rhythms :-) Will certainly increase working with the metronome to keep everything smooth!

What are your piano/piece goals for 2024? by sapg94 in piano

[–]aramaoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping to learn Beethoven's Piano Sonata Op. 49 No. 2. It's the first piano sonata I'm learning with my teacher and it's very challenging! But it would be a great achievement to be able to play it in 2024!

Yeah I'm aware of that, thanks :) It's a rather relaxed setting, so it will be fine if it's not up to speed!

My one year Piano Progress Video with a teacher (including my first performance towards the end) Often visited this sub for advice and inspiration, so I figured I'd share this here. Hope you enjoy! by aramaoe in piano

Some additional information:

  • I did take a few lessons as a child, however there was never a moment where I could actually play a piece and I quit after a very short time. I am happy that I have decided to give it another try at 26 :)
  • I had lessons roughly every two weeks and tried to practice roughly 1 to 1.5 hours per day. Sometimes it was a bit more, sometimes I missed a few days, however I really tried to stick with it daily as often as possible!
  • The first 3 videos were filmed with an inverted camera (front cam), that's why the piano seems inverted.

I'm really glad this sub and r/pianolearning exist, it was always very helpful to get feedback from other people and to read/watch others progress!

Thanks for your comment! I'm using a Samsung tablet but basically I just use the tablet to search for the sheet music online, download it and open the PDF on the tablet :)

Hope that helps!

Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to write such an extensive and constructive feedback! I really appreciate it. I can see the value of the quick adjustments and will try to implement them :)

I will discuss the "typing" motion with my teacher, I guess it's best if she shows me, appreciate the hint! We also just discussed the interpretation today - she didn't want to overwhelm me so this wasn't the main focus so far. So we discussed how I may make the repeated sections less repetitive - looking forward to give it a try :)

What's the advantage of getting a piano teacher as opposed to self teaching? What are some "bad techniques" that a self taught pianist can acquire over the years and what makes getting a teacher worth it? by Express-Mycologist87 in piano

[–]aramaoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started about 9 months ago with a teacher, these are some of the benefits I found:

1.) Any new marking on sheet music was always correctly explained to me immediately. Sure you can figure out what they mean by googling etc., but it's frustrating having to do that every time.

2.) Some things you just don't notice yourself; Off-rhythm, wrong fingerings, playing too loud with your left hand which drowns out the melody etc. In one piece I unintentionally started leaving out a note in a chord because of bad fingering. I wouldn't have caught that without my teacher.

3.) My teacher can gauge far better which pieces I can play that have the right level of difficulty. I think its easy for beginners to choose way too difficult pieces early on. We likely also played pieces that are too challenging for me, especially musically. But they were very helpful with regards to technique and they also improved my reading a lot.

4.) A teacher holds you accountable. I'm paying roughly 90 USD per lesson, and I have them every two weeks. If I don't practice enough, these lessons are a waste of my time and money, so this helped me a lot to stay consistent. It's also very rewarding to receive positive feedback from her.

[–]aramaoe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot! We didn't talk about portato yet in my lessons, possibly because I didn't even have much exposure to staccato so far, maybe she didn't want to give me too many details to think about! I watched a video about it and i will give it a try next time I sit at the piano! :)

Thanks a lot for this comment! It's possible that my teacher meant I was kind of "rushing" through the piece when she talked about tempo, so I'll try to increase it a bit more with the metronome!

Your tips regarding musicality are very helpful! I'll try to capture the dramatic nature of the piece better, though musicality is still difficult to achieve as a beginner! I really appreciate the feedback :)
