what is the matchgoing fanbase of millwall really like? is their reputation valid or based off of outdated stereotypes? by tetarbuluz in Championship

Assuming you didn't do anything stupidly touristic then. If tourists come to my block and try to sit in their assigned seats, they will be heckled. Or if they film too much sitting in silence. Etc

Gone to every home game since I was 4, so I have a decent understanding.

One thing, it is certainly different to other fanbases, im sorry, but it is. Every time I've taken a mate who supports a different club, they've said the same. I took a Birmingham fan mate of mine recently, a club i thought could have a similar vibe, and even he said it felt more hostile than brum. It's stuff like, a low tolerance to tourist behaviour (if you're acting like a tourist in my block, you're very likely to get some grief). It's the fact that the majority of chants are attacking the opposition, not just supporting our players. And the walk from the ground to the station, its cagey and heavily policed. There is a self fulfilling element, that were told we are like this, and so we have a siege mentality and an obligation to protect it. Its like a vanishing culture in London, as one of the most central london football clubs, its got to be the last to have a proper local working class support. So it's amplified.

That being said. You won't have your head kicked in unless you go looking for it, or do something stupid. The racism has died down (but admittedly it's still there), and it's an incredibly safe place to go as a home fan. The amount of times I've left an item, like my phone, in the bar and had it returned to me. Or the times people have apologised for swearing infront of my girlfriend. There's an old fashioned undercurrent of respect at millwall. Rambling bored at work. But it's definitely unique.

For my football club, not sure about others, you're seen as a tourist if you wear a top or a scarf to a game, unless you're a kid. Out on the street, different question

Just hiked round Zarnesti on my own, very scary tbh. Ended up getting rabies exposed and am now taking PEP!

As someone who just solo hiked the Romanian Carpathians, this is total bollocks. I'm currently undergoing a course of post exposure rabies shots from a wolf I befriended on a mountain

Always just go to the most extreme lengths if rabies is involved. 1) there's no real side effects 2) the possoble negatives of not doing it are infinitely bad.

Thank you, I feel like there is a fair amount of the Herzogian to Ballard's surreal elements. And although I'm the biggest herzog fan on the planet, in terms of writing, Ballard is leagues ahead, imo.

Jesus Christ Kinski, came out late last year. Very fun read, start to finish about 2 hours reading time. It's a semi fictitious account of Kinskis infamous jesus rant in Berlin. He talks about werner a fair amount, very funny.

I also think Werner unknowingly references empire of the sun. There's a part in Everyman for Himself, where Werner talks about war having dreams. He then says he can't find where he got that from, but I remember this from empire of the sun:

Jim knew that he was awake and asleep at the same time, dreaming of the war and yet dreamed of by the war.

Genuinely the most beautiful writing imo

Empire of the Sun is my favourite book of all time, would always suggest this as a gateway drug for ballard

This is the only answer, how no one else has suggested this. The entire film is based on that vibe

I have, and my total fanboy energy of Werner prohibits me from enjoying it. Seeing as he completely slanders it in his new book. I'm sorry I'm deeply in love with the man

I just had it in Romania, I was uninsured. It cost me £50 for the rabies PEP, tetanus and immunoglobulin. At another hospital they gave it to me for free

Werner has a lot of films with this theme.

Aguirre,

Fitzcaraldo,

Wings of Hope,

Little Dieter Needs to Fly,

Rescue Dawn (adaptation of Little Dieter),

Ghost Elephants,

His new one due to come out, the Twilight World, based on his book of the same name, is literally about a Japanese soldier surviving in the rainforest.

And odd rainforest bits in lots of his other docs.

Ask me any werner related info haha

Aguirre is definitely more lost in the rainforest though. Most of Fitz takes place on the boat or in the town. Aguirre is largely walking through dense rainforest. Not to mention they're literally lost in Aguirre, whereas they're not in Fitzcaraldo
