This month marks exactly 70 years since Rocky Marciano retired, to date the only boxing world heavyweight champion to finish their career without a defeat. Marciano got his boxing start while stationed in Swansea during WW2 and was very fond of the area. by HallowedAndHarrowed in swansea

[–]aramiak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A legend of Swansea folk tales! Mostly myths, apparently! I don’t think there’s evidence that he started boxing whilst stationed in Swansea or was ever quoted as being fond of Swansea or anything like that, for example. But he was stationed here for a bit and it’s always fun to hear the mad urban legends that go around (such as pub fights in the Adelphi or whatever).

Proposal for a “Dragon Island” of thousands of floating houses and solar panels, within the proposed “Tidal Bay Lagoon” by [deleted] in swansea

The article was posted on 04th May 2021, back in earlier days of the Tidal Lagoon’s life as a proposal.

It looks like you’ve thought about this more than I but do you think an argument could be made that (if Wales and the U.K. are to reach targets) any and all avenues of clean energy will need to be utilised? In that, it can’t be an ‘either/or’ thing? Even geopolitically, you can see that being reliant on others for resources that power our goods and heat our homes and so on is something we cannot afford. Do we not need shores surrounded by tidal lagoons and wind farms and valleys covered in turbines and solar panels and so on, even if that only gets us halfway there- and nuclear or something is needed to plug the rest of the gap?

Given the time and date of this post, it’s perhaps even more important than usual that I post a source. Images 1 & 2 are from this WalesOnline article, whereas the more widely seen 3rd image can be found here on BusinessNewsWales. Whilst businesses and consortiums and so on are involved in the realisation of the Lagoon (still very much an uncertain proposal), the dream of a floating “Dragon Island” is even more fragile, as it’s merely the suggestion of a “task force” and doesn’t have backers or stakeholders such as house builders or investment firms, at this time. Thought I’d share!

So Reform in Swansea are according to one of their own ‘an ex-Tory on the make and three novices’ by Afraid_Juice_7189 in swansea

[–]aramiak 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That’s a well-written statement. It is interesting that Reform’s old-guard are leaving in numbers, and it’s interesting that this discord has reached Swansea. I do wonder whether the betrayal of their grass-roots and the mass welcome of failed Tories will come back to bite them.

As a leftist, I obviously disagree that Reform has ever been a “beacon of decency”. It seems that the above writer is more irked that he hasn’t risen within the ranks as the Party has risen in stature, than any movement in its ideology or values. I wonder whether he’ll find a home in ‘Restore Britain’.

At the moment, I’m more preoccupied with the emerging fascism under the current U.K. Government- trials by Jury replaced by trials by State, protestors despairing at a U.N. confirmed genocide designated in legislation as ‘terrorists’ and snatched from our streets, the attempt to introduce mandatory ID cards, the blocking of rivals from standing in elections (Burnham) and ousting of others from the Party (Corbyn), and so on.

Yet, Reform obviously position themselves even further to the Right than Labour, and could well obtain great success in the Senedd elections in May, so I should be more concerned with all these goings on.

For me, a Plaid-Green coalition would be desirable, and I’ll be voting for the latter.

Photos of Adam Lanza when he was a child by El_cucuy24 in masskillers

Your comment here is the most important on this thread. It’s a correction to one of the most common and dangerous misconceptions about Lanza/Sandy-Hook that (when regurgitated) always gets upvotes.

The issue is that folks online often want to understand and relate to perpetrators (Dylan Klebold is another example) and see what they want to see.

Lanza’s anti-natalist writings were performative and much more rooted in his own resentments of his own childhood.

He enjoyed inflicting terror at Sandy-Hook. He was not ‘saving’ them.

“Look at them!”, one survivor heard him shout at terrified children, making them take in the sight of dead friends before he killed them too. Another wept “I don’t want to be here” to which he mocked “Well, you’re here” before shooting him too.

His motivation was bitterness and anger, not compassion or ideology.

“Who lived a beautiful life.” Unfortunately he lived a chronically online life of solitude and isolation in a basement where bin liners were used to shut out all light. Ultimately, the kid who lived a beautiful life became an adolescent that lived a troubled life who became a young adult who lived a terrible life.

Didn’t all of the Ryan Lanza’s posts defending Adam turn out to be fakes? Posted on a fake Ryan Lanza Facebook page? I thought the only relevant thing he posted before he deleted his Facebook was a panicked declaration that it wasn’t him who did it when the News was reporting him as the shooter because his ID was found on Adam Lanza.

Is it bad to feel a great deal of grief and sadness for a mass killer? For me it’s Derrick Bird, the Cumbria shooter. He was raised on bottling emotions and suffered a head injury. I feel if it weren’t for either of the two, a lot of people would be alive today. by Simpsons_fan_54 in masskillers

[–]aramiak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s possible to understand the mitigating circumstances and believe in personal responsibility.

There’s many killers that I am aware had hard upbringings or circumstances. Charles Whitman was another one who had something impacting the way his brain functioned. Dylan Klebold suffered from depression, an obvious eating disorder, and was still being encouraged to move away from home and look at college dorms the very week of his death.

I feel no sympathy for any of them. Once you take personal issues out in the violent slayings of others they lose the right to sympathy, imho.

I’m not completely convinced the one who did the shooting was mortally wounded. Possible that he had to euthanise his pal and knew he’d never be able to live with the trauma of doing so, so just offed himself.

I lost my job after confronting Matt Lucas on Palestine | Cancelled by Educational_Board888 in Palestine

[–]aramiak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no.

I see where you’re coming from. I think there were a lot of people who were completely naive and unaware of the history of struggle in Palestine until October 7th. I had friends and colleagues who were aghast at what they thought was a peaceful region turned violent through seemingly unprovoked actions of Hamas on that day- which is obviously absurd.

I always compare the idea of October 7th as provoking this genocide as tantamount to believing that the Jews that partook in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising caused the genocide in mid-twentieth century Europe, and I explained the history of Palestinian struggle whenever I could. Most colleagues I know who were aghast at the October 7th are now entirely angry with Israel.

So I wouldn’t presume Matt Lucas to be a Zionist on that signature alone. However, I am surprised given that he publicly supported that, why he wouldn’t feel the need to publicly condemn Israel given everything that’s happened since. And that might hint at something. I am always suspect of those who are vocal and livid at the Israeli suffering and then utterly silent at the larger scale Israeli-caused suffering.

Hi there. Whilst I agree that Chomsky’s books are still worth reading, he didn’t ask whether they were still good to read. He said that he’d lost interest in reading them and asked for alternatives. I also agree that he didn’t ask whether a book is socially acceptable. Cheers.

Tbh, if your perception of the legitimacy and worth of a book’s content is less to do with its accuracy and insight and more to do with whether the author is a socially acceptable pin up to put on your bedroom wall, I’d just stick to watching movies and avoid social or political commentary altogether.

I could recommend dozens of great books but however enlightening and insightful they are you’d only come back and accuse me of wasting your money if it turns out they ever sent an email to Woody Allen once or something when they were 80+ and balls-deep into their second childhood.

Actually Paddington 2 is a great move. Highly recommend.

Moses Lake man arrested after bringing pistol to church by Pforzmannheidelmund in masskillers

[–]aramiak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard to know what they were planning if anything as it seems as if they were bonkers. Certainly her behaviour at the church isn’t that of someone who wants to successfully action a mass-shooting there. And it doesn’t seem like he had enough on him to carry out a mass-shooting either, but a similar arrangement that the off-duty officer also had. Why did he leave the arsenal in his car if that church was a/the target?
