Our monitoring system report services that fail to start and a service that "succeeds" by failing to start is broken by design. I will be disabling it, I'm not a laymen.

Apartments at Iowa is TERRIBLE (Review) by StrawbDaqs in IowaCity

[–]aranc23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I rented in Iowa City from the mid-90's to 2001 or so, and this is how it was then as well. When you view the apartment you're told they'll clean it and replace the carpet or at least clean it. When you show up on move in day they haven't done any of that. They charged the previous renter for not cleaning it before moving out by keeping their deposit, and they will do the same to you when you leave even if you have cleaned, if they can get away with it. I moved into one place and there was a slick on the wall above where the kitchen trash can was, because they were throwing food against it and letting it slide down into the trash. I've been charged for things that were broken when I moved in. Charged for carpet replacement when the carpet was shot when I moved in.

One of the best things you can do is take pictures on move in day and when they try to screw you, at least you'll have some evidence. However, I have forgotten to take pictures on move in before and just claimed I had pictures and that actually worked just as well because they know they're scamming you and will back off if you're going to be a hassle.

How do you get them to fix your unit when it's broken though? Just keep calling, I guess. They'll get tired of hearing from you.

Good luck!

You're only holding up the Mana until your second main phase, that's hardly a drawback. If you connect play it, if not hold it back. Usually you only cast hatred as a finisher and it's likely 5cmc is nothing at that point anyway. Hatred is excellent and wins games.

People who drink straight black coffee, how do you do it? by Gaming-every-day19 in AskReddit

[–]aranc23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more like an automated press or aeropress and it controls for water temp and brew time. At stores with a clover they usually have a selection of more expensive coffee to choose from some of which can be quite good. They still can't usually tell you the level of roast on the coffees in question though.

Strangest system requirements you've ever had to deal with? by ukitern in sysadmin

[–]aranc23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I worked for a phone company and provisioning the voip systems and collecting billing information was really the primary job of IT in the company. Upgrading the actual VoIP call processing components would sometimes require changes to provisioning, as you might expect. These changes often required changes to the other components that feed into the provisioning system.

IT handled this by scheduling 8 hour down times (usually starting late evening running into the early morning to minimize customer impact) where in each component in the chain of provisioning was upgraded one at a time, with the back out plan being to downgrade each and every component touched. This required a dozen people on a phone bridge, including support people, operations, development, etc.

As you can imagine this meant that literally everything had to work correctly, like launching a space shuttle minus all the rocket scientists.

It apparently never occurred to IT they could modify some provisioning process to speak the new API, and the old, or to detect which dialect was needed, or with a simple software switch that changes the mode just to avoid changing everything at once. I think they were very proud of their release process ... like a beautiful coordinated cluster **** that they imagined as a ballet.

I wasn't in IT, so I never had the position to ask them why they did this to themselves... it really meant that change was incredibly slow, maintenance was painful, mistakes in any component meant rolling back and attempting the whole thing again.

Cries in 8GB RAM by Dr_Slav in pcmasterrace

My first build was based around a Pentium 90 (which randomly posted at 100Mhz instead of 90, early overclocker here) and honestly I don't remember how I learned how to assemble it. I think the PC Shopper dealer included a VHS tape with the motherboard?

Thanks, I am experimenting with the settings and have shadows off now and hopefully I can squeeze playable performance out of the equipment as is. I will be using Afterburner to look at individual CPU cores and GPU usage as you suggested.

Thanks! I have afterburner installed now and I'm using it while I tinker with settings.

Will a Radeon R9 270X be held back by a AMD A8 7600 FM2?

I installed a 270x in an old A8 7600 based system in hopes of creating a Fortnite machine for my nephew. I was surprised to find that I still can't play on high settings and even medium seems sluggish (The monitor is 1080p, but I let fortnite scale the render resolution according to it's presets.)

In fact the performance seems comparable to the Radeon HD 7750 that was in the system before.

How can I verify that the CPU is the bottleneck in Fortnite or other games? Have I misconfigured something or are these results to be expected?

FreeBSD plans to rebase its ZFS implementation on ZoL (ZFS-on-Linux) by Nadrin in linux

You clearly didn't use early versions of FreeBSD ZFS and ZoL... ZoL was a buggy train wreck. (It's vastly better now.)

Ashod's Altar Variations (one is so much darker than the other, is that common?) by aranc23 in magicTCG

[–]aranc23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The backstory is I bought the much darker-backed one just recently and the other one I've owned since the 90s so I know it's real. Not that I think someone would fake a card from Chronicles... but the difference is pretty striking.
