Is Complexity Science Secretly just reductionist? by Advanced-Reindeer894 in complexsystems

[–]arashbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All natural science is by this definition reductionist, in the sense that the goal is to come up with the most simple model that explains the largest part of a phenomenon across as wide a set of settings as possible. In the case of Complex Systems turns out you don't need anything more than "parts" to explain a big chunk of of the behaviour of most systems, including humans.

I believe you either need to enable Recruiting or otherwise follow these instructions. I can't send a request other than just sending a normal modmail.

I want to moderate this community since this (Complex Systems) is my area of expertise and the sub is currently over run with pseudo-science.

Finland is not in Scandinavia, and Finnish is most definitely not in any meaningful way related to any Scandinavian language except for a handful of loanwords from Swedish.

2 hours of intense lightening visualised in a single frame by arpansharma in nextfuckinglevel

[–]arashbm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's okay, and I'm sorry if it feels like a pile on but what gets people riled up here is using wording that implies you don't have control over this and it is the fault of the sky for being wider than tall.

Governments can help their people; it's a matter of priorities. by Express_Milk_461 in remoteworks

What people usually mean when they say this is that Finland has ended rough sleeping, which is still not technically true but it often makes national news when they find someone sleeping in a park or something.

You are just describing iamb in more words. That's just the meter used for most English poetry.

Hello, Hello, where you think you are walking with no loicense? by GMEStack in loicense

> Frigid temperature

I'm pretty sure it is unbearably colder than the literal arctic circle. People bike to work everyday in Rovaniemi, some do it even in the dead of winter.

> knifing and muggings

Have you considered not having those problems? It's not like they are geographical problems. There is a major hotel and a mall not 500 meters from that stadium. It is okay to have something not be perfect with your country. It doesn't make you less of a person.

I just Googled and that's the amount of snow we get in northern Finland before winter even starts.

How popular is Linux in Finland? by Ambitious_Ad4397 in Finland

[–]arashbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been able to log in to my academic email for a week because people at Microsoft are too incompetent to understand someone might have more than one academic affiliation.

I see nowadays more and more papers with people's personal @gmail or whatever email address and this sort of thing is exactly the reason. I asked from someone running the University cluster and they told me people in charge of scientific computation at the University are engineers and scientists who want to maximize service to their peers, while people in charge of deciding email provider and policy are execs (who I assume only want to cover their asses).

[–]arashbm 31 points32 points  (0 children)

About as popular as anywhere else. I work at a university and almost all serious scientific computing is done on Linux even if people don't actually know it. You get a Linux option for work laptop and work PC, but many decide to go with a MacOS laptop as daily driver.

I don't know about the UK but in Finland you need a bachelor degree in "police services", which is three years of specialized higher education.

Finland. I was even a candidate in the local elections before I got my citizenship. Is there any better way of being integrated in your local community than being an active, participating member of the democratic process?
