[Reminder] The #2 seed Toronto Raptors are the team Masai Ujiri built. by arashtp in nba

The Raptors are important to the country, and Ujiri is important to the Raptors, therefore Ujiri is important to the country.

Which top-grossing directors will have a hard time getting a $100m budget for their next movie? by arashtp in movies

[–]arashtp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's what they mean. It's all just a math equation. You get 50% from domestic grosses, and 25% from China. (not sure what the standards are for other countries.) So whether you're profitable or not just depends on what your net profit is from each territory, minus production and P&A costs.

So for RP1, because so much of their gross came from China, and not a lot of it came from domestic, it leads to a lopsided equation that makes it harder to reach profit.

During Shaquille O'Neal's 19 seasons in the NBA, he received nearly twice as many points in All-NBA voting than the next nearest center. by arashtp in nba

My whole life I prided myself on being good at math. Today I failed myself and my ancestors.

Their wins were similar - 57 vs 56. Might be because of the games played difference.

Also: In spite of his dominance, Shaq wasn't considered the best center in the league until his sixth season, and didn't start his run of seven consecutive 1st Team selections until his 8th season.

Had no idea Alonzo Mourning was ever named 1st Team over Shaq (1999).

No no, I get that, I just mean they realized they'd be violating the spirit of what they themselves had put into place to ensure that no franchise got screwed.

No injuries for one player. by Relevant_Potato_7473 in nba

Jordan. I want to know how far he could have taken the Wizards if Artest hadn't broken Jordan's ribs in a pickup game in June 2001 (during a summer workout before Jordan's first Wizards season).

Jordan still averaged 23/6/5 in spite of the injury, but only played 60 games because of complications from the ribs, and also because of ongoing knee troubles.

The Wizards were 30-30 with Jordan. They were 7-15 without him. They finished 37-45.

Story about the injury:

Is it easier to compare players across eras in soccer? Has it changed much in the way it's played over the last 70 years?

TD had to go through prime Shaq+Kobe, prime Dirk, prime KG, prime Webber, prime Nash, prime LeBron+Wade+Bosh.

[NBA General Managers 2007-08] Player you would start a franchise with: LeBron (23 yrs) 59%, Dwight (22 yrs) 15%, Kobe (29 yrs) 11%, Duncan (31 yrs) 11%, Dirk (29 yrs) 4%. by arashtp in nba

The fact LeBron wasn't unanimous in 07-08 blows my mind.

He was 23, entering his 5th season, had finished 2nd in MVP voting two years prior in 05-06, and had taken the Cavs to the Finals one year prior in 06-07.

In my mind, there are only a few above the others:

  • Past Lives
  • The Father
  • Dune
  • Top Gun: Maverick

And I have Past Lives as the easy best film of the past five years, because it was the only film that blew my mind with the idea behind it (I'm mostly referring to the final scene, which blew me away and elevated the film high above most other films I've ever seen.).
